Speedometer just stopped working
#1
Hi, my speedometer just stopped working while driving on the highway. Amazingly the 4 speed auto still shifted the gears as normal. Only the RPM still works. Why?Huh

the 4speed has 2 speed sensors
the VSS on the tail of it,
and the emerg. backup VSS2 in the speedo cluster, (a reed switch and magnet ,crude)
what does the odometer do.??
stuck means the cable is bad.
if the odometer works, only the speedo is dead.
easy no?
and scanning the PCM it will tell you of the speedo or tranny vss is bad.
there are 2.

my speedo page shows all the guts

cable, gear to odom.
cable to speedo clock.
cable to VSS2, clicker.
if the cable is ok, the odometer works. in almost all cases.
the clock can jam and when it does, the odometer still works
the cable bad, (snapped, kills all 3 dead)

guts 101, LOL

Thanks for the response. I have no time yet to remove the speedo cluster to check it.
But I think since the odometer still works, there must be something inside the speedo is broken or the sprink for the needle is broken.

Are they (speedometer and odometer) located in two different places but share the same board?

The fuel and temperature gauges still works as normal.

In case I can find the instrument clusters from 96-98 Sidekick 1.6L, 16V, 4 speed auto or from the Sport 97-98, do you think they are all interchange with each other?

I think they all fit if the driveline, 4doors, 4wd, 4speed, all match (and abs) the parts list shows they do.

which country?
USA< Canada, or E60(puerto rico) the body is Suzuki SV418. now SE not SQ. SV are rare.
ill answer for usa. (market code 03, uSA< mph, speed) 96-98 all are same, for year.(only)

when the odometer works ,that means the speed needle bushings seized.! first they rattle ,then scream, then seize. all do this, seen many,
helped many solve it.
there are only 2 fixes
swap the clocks inside,
or
swap the whole cluster (huge numbers exist, as shown here)
There are 12 heads total, N.America.
For your car, (matched) there are only 2 heads. (one cami, one japan)
with cluster out, the bottom has sticker TAG (you must look first) shows which head you have, a suzuki p/n there. 34100-xxxxx. or 34101
there are 2 clusters.
JAPAN head:"
34101-77EN0 (that 77 means sport revision) the clock is 34120-77ee0 (and only is used on sports these 3 years , no G16s fit from say non sport sidekicks.)
2: the CAMI head, (means made in the Canada plant not japan)
34100-69aa0 (with meter, 34120-69aa0)
both meters work on 2d and 4door.

i think both numbers are discontinued now. at suz. but google might find some,,,, out in the wild......blue yonder....

i think the heads (jap/can.) , are same, and may be the meters too.

complexity,:
see the matrix i made, its not fully sport coverage just G16s mostly and just Cal FED, no canada or E60s, or other 99 markets.

http://www.fixkick.com/sensors/speedo/cl...frack.html

but yours is the sport, the wide frame sport J18 engine.
sports are very rare cars.. finding parts like this for such a rare car is not easy. (besides the mundane, tires, shocks, brakes, belts, etc)
the sport runs very unique parts in the cluster

my guess is just one head works, but is 2 numbers, one from japan and other from CAMI plant,

facts
my schematic shows. the rear connector is 13/10/16 pin form factor.
and
this. see your clicker,? VSS2.

Thanks for the reply. I am looking for a replacement of the speedometer cluster with speedometer cable and its tube.
Do you know where I can find one?

there are no speedo's sold new, What you see on ebay used is all there is.... or car-parts.com (wreckers net) (i see zero there)
suzuki does not sell them, but call them and ask.... is best , i posted the 2 p/n
if you remove the cable
then pull out the internal flex cable
grease it put it back it can last 200k more miles.
if the cables is good now, why replace it./?
if not good, they are in fact hard to find, sports are rare, and due to that rarity, most aftermarket makers are loath to make parts for it.
Suzuki is fast becoming like
ISUZU
DAEWOO
YUGO
and GEO , you name it.

only sport cluster fit sports.

if suzuki does not sell it, (expect $500 to $1000 bill)
only used clusters are left.

btw, ive called the top speedo overhauling companies, and they say, sorry we dont touch suzuki
after all they cant buy the parts inside from suzuki, so how could they fix one?

ive fixed a few, in some cases 3 useds ones of ebay and mix parts inside till 1 works
its not joy,
no easy task
no fast fix.

or buy GPS speedo meter
glue it to dash and end job.
many have, or just load the road map app (free) to a Cell, put up a cell pod clamp, on dash, click GPS speed, and be done.

suzuki list the cable here
https://www.suzukicarparts.com/parts/199...eid=214820

not cheap.

here is the head page

note the goose eggs.?

Do you think the GPS speedo will work while the speedo in the car does not work?
Used speedo we will never know if they work or not.
Then what if the rpm still work and the gears still shift, let it be like that!!!
you just remember yourself when to change the engine oil.

GPS works, with a battery or 12vdc of the cig lighter port, all over earth, its independent of any vehicle,(car, train, plane, boat), its a system. unto its self, in deep space.HEO.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Positioning_System

your current head,
the speedo needle is dead, just the needle.
the vss2 clicker is working, or the ECU will complain, errors, scan the ECU/PCM see any DTC errors?, no?, then VSS1 and VSS2 are both good. i bet they are.
the odometer works. so no issues there, proves cable works. end to end.

only the needle is broken , the mph clock is DOA, forever.
Suzuki stopped selling the mph chock , tacho clock, separate and stopped selling the whole head. (trike 3 we are out)
options,
Use a dedicated TOMTOM GPS, ever seen those? it shows computed speed at all times.
(via GPS and TOM computes time from 2 points on the fly, to calculate, velocity, MPH (or KPH) (the average MPH is pretty accurate)

leaves only 4 paths.
1 used heads
2 ignore it
3 or put up the GPS MPH gauge, or (use a CELL with travel app, that also does speed, most do)
4: USA path 4, OBD2 meters.
http://www.amazon.com/Head-Up-Display-Sp...B005X4QCAA

the car is rare.
and that is never good, for OEM parts. (check out production figures on Sports, it was super low)

Your car 1996 if in usa, is OBD2 compliant.
as such, it can also use OBD2 meters
for example all scan tools made here, you can see the PID , parameters, called speed, the ECU in your car reports speed at all times. (by law here, here)
and they make meters that jack into such , and OBD2 port, see photo below.
and shows many things, even speed.
google autometer. (what you see , can be changed with this meter)

http://www.amazon.com/OBD-II-Display-Spe...B00GY0E7J0

the usa car, starting in 1996 (1998 in canada)
uses this scan port, OBD2 (we invented OBD2 so.,... know it well)
16 pins D-shell connectors. got that, then its OBD2 systems.
http://www.fixkick.com/CEL/DLC/1999.jpg

a stand alone meter can be way less than 1 or 2 used heads
i didn't price shop for GPS or the OBD2 meters. no time today. I'd bet fleabay has great deals. on such device...

Ive had to buy many used heads, for cars that have no OBD2.
and most were bad, until i found one head the mph meter clock didnt scream. or stick.
i had to mix internal parts. to get one head, but finding sport heads, and working right in 2016. ouch.
