speedometer cable- chevy tracker 98 2w 4door
#1
Nice to be here and hope to find some answers.

Long story short I got a chevy tracker 98 4door 2w thinking that will be relatively cheap investment. Did I know what I got, when everything started just as I left the dealer on my way home. 20miles the check engine on, the speedometer bounce and some noise time to time, transmission shifts rough and you can not normally downshift.

Since then I have been tackling all these and other problems. I am stuck with my speedometer head broken and cable end bad plastic cracked. Ordered a head.its on its way from a junk yard but can't find the right speedo cable anywhere. Bought several from napa what people were suggesting and advanced auto parts but they are not the exact fit.

If anybody here has the exact model as mine and did change the cable can suggest something. I know that other makers have the cables routed different. (Geo , Suzuki)

Thanks

4speed, 3speed or 5speed stick?
lets hope its all simple.....cheap stuff.
yes, the cable is problematc,
2wd , 4wd, 4door and 2 door..A/T m/t. and with tach and not tach, over 9 cables ,just 96-98

the aftermarket only stocks some version, so i need full car spec.
the cab on mine run left dash across dash and then thru passenger fire wall, very surprising to see that. from a 1991.
at body vin t6403446~ T= 1996 year, they all changed.

keep in mind the 2wd has no transfer case and the cable moves way forward in that case.(no pun)

my guess, at car.
4door
2wd
AT
w/tacho the suzuk pn is 34910-70E00, $65 (oops im wrong its 5speed)
in 1996 that number is differ, for same car, i think that is when they did the cross dash move. (lateral side impact mods, MAJOR, reason)

i do not know how to get Gm parts.
i tired two gm top places, both say discontinued,

the transmission mybe (if 4speed) upset, at that loss of the VSS sensor in the speedo.. it can go to tranny TCM limphome and skip a gear.\
Usually the O.D. lamp flashes or acts odd.. this means the TCM is upset, DTCs. on tranny.set.
fix speedo first. the ECU will not have full power either until VSS is happy. (spinning)

cheers.

Thanks for quick responce.
Sorry I realized I missed some important info.

It is 5 speed manual transmission. there is a tachometer. A picture is worth a thousand words so I am attaching here to see the setup.

you will notice that the cable is too long so hangs a bit. (it is the napa one. 6151678 I had to widen the hole it passes into the cabin a bit bigger as the end of the cable is slitty larger).

ps.By the way forgot to mention that I used a lot of information from the fix kick. What a great library for these vehicles. Very grateful for that.

Thanks a lot

fixkick is right I checked at least 20 different GM parts distibutors all over the U.S. and could not find the part you need. your going to have to use a Suzuki part give fixkick a little time with the additional info and pics you sent he should figure out what you need and where to get it.

someone moved the cable fire wall pass through, my 96/97 trackers pass to the right side.
seen here, is the speedo cable the end part is clear.
5sp here tool and 4doors
http://www.fixkick.com/engine/97-motor-p...ge_14.html

the 5sp, if clutch is ok, and dont drag. is the $3 bad plastic on end of shifter, gone or worn to nothing.
part ID #27 here

http://www.fixkick.com/buy-parts.html#5sp-shift

+ 19. for good measure.

ok cable is,
98, 2door, 5sp, with tacho ERROR i meant 4door. sorry
so
that is same prefix

34910-71e10 (but i think this is ok) check PDF below.
here it is.... it should fit tracker. and be full lenght.

here is the real list,
and sorry for my typo, i was in a hurry, wife beckoning to bed. hurry honey....
yes, your photos are clear, in fact, it's identical to my 97, 2wd. (a basket case turned good)
i got the P/N correct but typed the doors wrong.... working too fast.

see new list of actual cable numbers ,

see speedo cables in my list. the page 7
http://www.fixkick.com/buy-parts.html

part ID:17-6
-71E00 is yours i think. 4door 2wd - M/T 98 with tacho. 71e10

now you can look them up and not trust old farts... heheheheh LOL

i think this is it.
http://www.suzukicarparts.com/parts/inde...eid=214820

keep in mind with GM brain dead on trackers.
and factory cut over dates are different between the 2 production lines. and GM/s whim.
there is some risk, but i think the 98 is way past the mid year, cut over on 1996s.... VIN -----T640-- ------ serial. Tango is 1996 code.

this is a nice update to the list of parts. and are hard to find... so it belongs here.
thanks

Ok
I took a leap o faith and ordered this part. 3491071E10
Let you know when it shows up how it looks.

Since my speedometer needle was bouncing and clanking I had doubts that the cable was routed correct. I looked for more pictures online of the engine compartment to see if I could see the cable and from what I figured it has the right path.

Will get my speedometer head and the cable and hope to resolve this soon.

Thanks all for help.

if the speedo head makes noise, its bad, the needle bushing is shot, mine was too.
the other trick if find all clusters that use, your inside head. that can be done easy.

im crossing fingers too.. this part is the hardest and so is kickdown cables and clutch.
but this one wins the gold ring.
all the best to you !

Ok

The cable came yesterday and it is exactly like my original. Good call on that one, thanks. I installed last night and it is smooth and quiet.

In the rush I forgot to disconnect the battery when I start taking everything apart and I remember by the mid way where I was unplugging the connectors fro the cluster.

I did not notice last night as I finished late but this morning I notice the my temperature gauge is through the roof.

Also with the key off it doesn't get lower than this.

I I thought the needle moved but I tried to move the needle and it gets back the that.

Also I my day running light indicator is out.

I checked with my diagnostic OBD II and the temperature is normal 86 celsius.

all other seem to work fine. what in the world happen? I was so close the finish the dashboard job.
