Sealing the CMP?

Help. I replaced my Crankshaft Position Sensor to correct an engine stalling problem. Do I need to put a sealant such as permatex round the sensor?

I appear to have an oil leak since I replaced the sensor. The old sensor did not appear to have any seal where it seats near the valve cover. Thanks for your help.

My engine is a 16valve 1.6 liter in a 1999 Vitara/Chevy Tracker.

THE SENSOR HAS AND O-RING, IF MISSING THAT MEANS THE SELLER SOLD YOU USED PARTS OR MOLESTED.
its not uncommon for parts over the counter, are from last customer usage, and he stole or lost the oring then returned, it.

The o-ring on the new sensor is half the thickness of the original. The replacement o-ring also looks cheap. Frankly, the O-Ring in the image of the one from RockAuto also looks cheap and thin - just like the one on my replacement.

I will go back to O'Reilly's and ask for a better o-ring.

The replacement CMP appears to be slightly smaller in diameter than the original. When I transferred the o-ring from the old to the new CMP, it was slightly larger in diameter than the O-ring channel on the new CMP. The original CMP was made my Mitsubishi. The replacement CMP is made by Import Direct and is from Taiwan.

I have added the O-ring from the original Mitsubishi CMP to the O-ring that came on the Import Direct CMP. The two O-rings together more fully fill the O-ring channel.

Could I also put some Permatex gasket sealer around seat of the CMP? Any suggestions?

CMP are cloned by many makers,'
best is use better brands, that cost more, like BECK or SMP
the sensor needs Silicon grease for the o-ring, or while inserting it the ring can be damaged, this is a rule on all 0rings.

Import Direct , is nobody, who ever heard of them. ? google them , yes, nobody.
that is what brand names means, top famous makers names, not from china, with no name.
it not where made, but by whom, (makers name famous)

some do that , out comes the RTV and bam, sealed, it is your car, and your cash, and your decision on what is best for you.
Id bet you the top brands work, fit, last and do not leak. if installed with silicon grease.
the even sell that great at the counter, checkup, in $1 dinky tubes(samples). a nice idea that, as the big tube is like $20

gotta love Knockoffs. what i thinks is how long any knock off lasts, and if it dies on 1000 mile trip vacation how fun can that be. answer buy real parts. beck

fixing cars is easy, buying parts not
it is a brave new world.... full of knockoff junk and worse every day forward.
try parts from a ISO9000 certified factory, is my only answer./

OK. Thanks. I have ordered the SMP/Borg-Warner here at Advanced Auto Parts. Be in tomorrow morning. Thanks for your help on this. And, I will put silicon grease on the O-ring!

I hope it seals ok, if not the hole it fits into is corroded or damaged, (its one or the other)
some parts knockoffs from china are not engineered. (means not made from real suzuki plans and real drawings)
they actually measure a part and copy it, thus the term used,Knock off.

no allowance for the plastic to shrink just fresh out of the casting die... so the parts are undersized. and leak.
or use the wrong o-ring, again they guess, and guess wrong. (no drawings knockoffs)
gotta love cloning , no? (friendly sarc to THEM)

wishing you good luck on stopping leaks, some are not easy to cure.

I replaced the Chinese CMP with an SMP CMP - this immediately stopped the leak. No more issues.

On the SMP CMP I did grease the O-ring with silicon grease as you suggested. I had not done that on the Chinese/Import Direct CMP. That said the O-ring on the SMP was larger and protruded outward to a greater extent than the Import Direct. Finally, when I inserted the SMP CMP into the hole, it fit snuggly unlike the Import Direct.

I just returned from 10 days of extended operations with the Tracker and had zero issues. I am a happy camper.
