Newbie Service Manual question
#1
I just found this forum while trying to find an answer to a high idle question on an 1989 Sidekick.  I quickly realized that I need the Factory Service Manual.  An internet search showed me that sellers want an arm and a leg for the 89 Sidekick Manual, and about 13 bucks for the Geo Tracker manual.  Are there enough differences between the Sidekick and the Tracker that I couldn't make do with buying a Tracker manual to help sort out problems on my Sidekick?
Thanks

the FSM for those 2 early years are very rare now, (supply/demand)
the tracker manuals we made in far larger quantities,  huge, really.  and is the same thing, only trim is different made side by side in CAMI plant of canada.

same engine, same trans, same everything mostly,  yes some have different HVAC.

GM took the suzuki book and printed it out in there own words, with some errors. not many in 89. very close.

Gee spend 13 bucks, and see.  you will not be unhappy, the fuse box is different , I thing that is the only  true differance and is minor,  same colored wires and all.

high idle with DTC CEL flashing 12 code (normal is it?) means
vacuum leaks. all vacuum leaks end up at too fast hide,   over 850 RPM , unless the fast idle pin is logically true to ECU? fast idle mode is 920 rpm hot.
high idle hot right, as all are faster cold due to IAC thermal air valve.

vacuum leaks
or
thermostat bad running super cold. 180f is good 150 hard failed. watch out for fail safe thermostats that stick open by design and are bad)
in limphome mode. (not TDC 12 good)
IAC stuck open hot
someone played naughty with idle stop screw. (see willy nilly)

Dash pot stuck extended,  it must retract after about 15 seconds cold or hot started.

cheers and
good luck finding books.  and wait for new postings for lower prices on ebay.

ps
do not forget free books here.

hot fast idle on this ECU.
as  seen here.
wired via a "wired OR diode logic"  pin a3 high.
Power steering overload.
AC amp , air cond. running, compressor.
HLights on
Defrost rear glass option on.
and heater blower on.
test switch is DLC conn,
all those off idle is 800 +/- 50 rpm.

Thank you for all the information.  I ordered the Tracker book.  I won't be able to mess with the Sidekick for a few days.  I bought it cheap, sight unseen from a friend's uncle (it was supposed to be a Samurai) after it was stored outside with no top for about 12 years.   I got it home and got it started but that is about it (except for buying a Tracker for the interior and top hardware).  Once the book arrives I will bring the Sidekick closer to the shop and start checking things out.  I am sure to have more questions then.  I appreciate your help.

blu-yellow wire grounded is Diagnostic mode, 12 = happy./
F'/B means fuse box. dash . one car has fuse of diag and other does not., only DLC connector next to battery.

pin A14 TPS idle switch must be 0v, most easy to check at TPS actual.

you are always welcome to ask question, and expected.
old cars will have lots of problems.
yes tops can be different by year, but 89./90 are same I think , take to best-top maker.

step 1, (not to drive that is way more , for sure no brake fluid leaks or coolants)
step1, is the front crank pulley bolt, 17mm hex head deep wall socket fits, set the torque to (CW) to 94ft/lbs, locked up in 5 gear hand brake set hard, and chocked rear wheels. if will feel like spring winding up the drive line , normal, but not a loose bolt that is bad to bone (blows end of crank snout easy if not fully tight.) (TSB on this )
I call that the day1 check, you will not be sorry ever.

good luck in your build, sounds like fun bringing back.
this car if 4wd is blast to drive in deep snow.

that is right the car geo has vastly more manuals in the wild, and with minor fuse box differences.
seen on my fuse page.
