New gearbox noise after diff locker install?
#1
I have 94 16valve vitara I have just put a lockright in the rear and under acceleration there is a wine that sounds like a gearbox but to me transfer case because its with all gears and gets louder with speed I have changed the oil when I done my clutch about 1-2 months ago I noticed a very slight noise under deceleration after the oil change but I think the new noise could of been there before diff just was paying more attention diff setup is all correct checked universals they are all good but noticed play up down left and right on input shaft to rear drive shaft could it be bearings in transfer case I used the recommended oil. any place for me to look or start I changed gearbox oil today but had no difference to noise.

hello and welcome !
4wd, im sure. 2door or 4, 3,4,5 speed tranny?
play? where exactly?, transfer case output shaft or , real axle carrier, input shaft?

so you put in lockright.
you removed the carrier pinion shaft? ,it's not required, but step 2 in instructions have you check for play in all bearings first.

if the tail shaft of transfer , has play, felt, (not front to rear sliding) its bad, why are the 2 bearings or the spline.
but some times its just the transfer tail shaft yoke (u-joint) piece just bad. (splines inside shot?) remove yoke, look at spline for damage, try to pry tail shaft up and down with a wood stick. if it moves bearings are bad.

bearing 20 and 34 are the 2 bearings.

btw, bearing 43 is the bearing that goes dry and then bad, fat towed. too far.

It is in that bit I can feel play have felt other ones since tho and they all have movement.
Just not sure what to look at or start

that's not 4wd, right? its 2wd? but it matters buying parts.
no matter, testing, the parts that goes bad are same.
u-joint itself (cross piece (no play. felt or seen allowed, zero play.)
next is that slider spline yoke piece, to right above. (shinny bits)
it must slide, and that must happen, as rear axle moves in its arc, and trans flexing, in its mounts.
the slider most not move up/down/left/right

the 4wd car uses these parts.

part #8 can go bad. the spline can wear out , before the transmission tail shaft does. (the tail shaft is harder steel, vastly so)

where is your transfer case?

it's 2wd,
and those have different parts...

It is 4wd that photo was off internet was too wet to lay under car the shiny bit moves in and out and I had done the seals when I done clutch but there is up,down, left, and right movement there u said there should be none? I felt another one same place and that had same movement? All ujoints are good no play. Noise happens in 4wd and 2wd. Just the whining noise that can be heard under acceleration

that part 8 is a spline, it must only slide.
side to side movement is very bad, it be like .002" clearance new, can not be felt this play when new (takes dial indicators to measure)

whines only moving , never parked, in neutral.
right?
whine stops when moving or cut throttle? moving?
whine stops if you float the throttle (not speeding up or down, just floating cruise)?
noise worse accelerating?

finding noise source is not easy (moving only noise) lacking an electronic stethoscope.
and noise can telegraph, seen rear u-joints send noise up to transmission, end. fooling the tech.
but you already, found a bad part.
part 8 is bad.
so replace that. best is to replace known bad parts first. with noise.

these parts do go bad, its common on high mileage Vitara's.
