Finishing the conversion of my 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive project. It’s a 1996 4door with the 4 speed transmission and dummy transfer case. The front end was all bolt on. No welding required. And since it already has the dummy transfer case, the shafts are the same. I could have kept my transmission but it was on its way out so I’m swapping in the transmission from the donor car.
My mistake, upon installation of the transmission I did not seat the torque converter at the time and while tightening the engine and transmission together I heard a bang. I dropped the transmission. I was able to seat the torque converter all the way. The flywheel appears bent, hopefully that’s all that is damaged. Otherwise I need to purchase a transmission. It feels rough to be 90% done and then do something like this.

I found a new 98 transmission. What is the compatibility of the 03-72le transmission for the different years? Is the 98 plug and play with the 96? What is the year range for sourcing a transmission. I would assume I have more flexibility because I can reuse the tail housing.

the 2wd and 4wd output shaft in the 4speed box are not the same. (and is part rear clutch pack not trivial at all)
98 uses different oil line fittings on right side of tranny box but i think (IDK) they are the same in use. due to the clue below, all 96 to 98 transmissions g15 4speed have same factory part numbers.
G16 use suffix 57b10 on all, 4speed, whole tranny P/N: WHOLE BOX 96 ,97,98.

Alright looks like the transmission is okay. It goes into reverse and drive. This has been a lot more work then I estimated but now I’m close to being able to drive it.
The two connectors from the transfer case (black and white), I know one is for the 4wd light, what is the other for?
The only thing that doesn’t seem to work is the drive cluster doesn’t light when 4wd is engaged. Can’t be too disappointed, I’m glad everything else was bolt on.
