Identify Transaxle wiring connections

One of my projects is to get this rebuilt engine to run outside of the car - I plan on putting this engine in my 4x4 buggy. It's a 1.6L 16v from Suzuki Esteem (automatic transaxle), coil-on-plug, distributor-less. Same as the Suzuki Baleno outside North America.

I'm am currently trying to get the harness sorted out and set correctly before I plumb the gas. The current issue is:

- What are these connections? Do I need them to start/run the engine?
#1 - shifter position?
#2 - ?
#3 - ?
#4 - ?

   
   


This is how I plan to get the engine started/running. It's mounted on a stand with radiator, steering and gauge cluster. I have not cut anything significant from the harness, so it's is about 98% of the entire wiring from the car.

Suzuki Esteem what year is it.?
the manuals for it are year based.
and all that is covered in the manuals real an online,   I presume you have the esteem ECU and harnesses
the shifter position would prevent cranking the engine not in park or neutral.
its an  automatic and has  speed sensors to shift correctly via the TCM (TCM may be inside ECU, forming  a PCM)
what matters first on all cars is year,  all books based on that.

the transmission connectors are all covered

C31 is 9 pin range selector, page 182 (starter blocking) and page p235 is better
C33 shift solenoid pair , 2 pins
C24 , output speed sensor.
as you can see just like the sidekick(vitara) they moved the TCM in to the ECU, and all wiring radically different for AT. and backup lights too. O/D lamp in cluster dash.
starter lockout, P/N

the manual is 2000 pub.
so is 1995 to 1999 at least.
the first thing to look at , besides VIN and year is what ECU is there, is it PCM or ECU and TCM box (2 boxes or 1) TCM is the older transmisson control module.

Sorry, I should have mentioned the year. It's a 1999 Esteem and it has 2 computers. The smaller TCM and the bigger ECU. Thanks for the links.

I see from the FSM that it does need to be in park or neutral to to start the car. Can I jump some wires to make it think it's in park?
Will the engine run properly without the other connectors attached? I don't mind it throwing codes as long as it runs well.

sy416, 1999... got it.
this transmission is electronically shifted,  the TCM does that,. just like all modern cars do now.
the 99 year has 2 brains, the ECU for engine and one for trans, called TCM
99 has only 2 models of ECU  is #33920-65GH0 federal48
and 33920-65GK0 calif.  (smog rules e33 market coded)
The TCM in this car that does all shifting , is 38880-65g31.

sure you can jump wires, to crank,  
the PRNDL switch  can be faked (jumped.) and cranked and started for sure. 
the book I showed you is 1999.
and the pages to see are.
page 240 and connector C32 is the range switch,  PRNDL

jump pin 5  to  pin 6 and the starter works.  page 182 for IGN ST , hot wired,   182 is starter motor path and page 240 is TCM shift switch RANGE< wiring.  9pins total
the tranny can not upshift unless all its speed sensors are working. or the TCM just does nothing.

Again, thanks for the help. I jumped the 5-6 wires and it turned over! Just need to fill the antifreeze, connect the gas and exhaust and hopefully it will start up. Maybe I should check for spark first? Not sure how to do that...

you;ve been busy, fun to watch you !

i have no idea what all is hooked up there (ECU plugged in?)
but yes spark,
then starting fluid (instant start in a can)


this engine has twin COPS not 4 like the J18/20/23 engines and, 2 COILS that run 2 spark plugs in series,  making testing harderd
 
pull 1 COP off head, and plug to spark plugs into the paired boots, and ground the spark plug shells to the engine ground. no crank see 2 fire, spark. eyes on gaps.


but try test fuel first (assume spark is good)


Spray it for 3 second in to the air intake, and crank repeat 3 times, if does not for 5 seconds and die there  is no spark.
I assume compression is not 50 PSI, and  about 180 PSI.

one more test after that fresh cranking below, pull out a spark plug is it wet with fuel? if not injectors are dead.

the crank and cam sensors most be good or there will be no spark
also if the ECU can not SEE spark it cuts all fuel. to proven crash and burn. (the coil packs are monitored)
if you have scan tool lots more can be done. (OBD2 scan port 16 pins there?)
crank and see RPM riise? in the scanner?  200 to 250 rpm cranked. par with good battery.
