I've ordered the plastic fittings to tighten up the slop on my 4x4 manual transmission shifter as you outline in this graphic...

I've read the FSM pertaining to this area and it's unclear if you can pluck these parts out of the shift lever opening or you have to remove the gearshift lever case to change those parts. Can you shed some light on this repair? Can you replace them after pulling the lever or do you need to disassemble further?
Is this a 30 min repair or 3 hour job? Any tips?
