Fixing the shifting flop and slop....

I've ordered the plastic fittings to tighten up the slop on my 4x4 manual transmission shifter as you outline in this graphic...

I've read the FSM pertaining to this area and it's unclear if you can pluck these parts out of the shift lever opening or you have to remove the gearshift lever case to change those parts. Can you shed some light on this repair? Can you replace them after pulling the lever or do you need to disassemble further?

Is this a 30 min repair or 3 hour job? Any tips?

Are you saying that part #27 comes out when you release the two shoulder screws? Or, do you need to pull it out from the bottom of the hole? It looks to be deep inside the cavity. Or does it stay captive to the shift lever when it comes out?

Ok. Looks like there is two ways to remove it. Either taking the screws out or not taking them out.

The FSM says to push down on the control lever and twist 90 degrees counterclockwise and lift out. I guess you are saying if you cannot overcome the spring pressure to do the twisting, you can remove the screws. I haven't looked at this yet, but it seems like the shoulder screws maybe difficult to get out if they are below the floor pan. But, the good news is you don't have to take apart the gearshift lever case.

ps the FSM is wrong
tuning the lever is not possible the #36 screws lock it to the casing
only the cup must turn, it floats.
