CV Boot replacement
#1
Dear Fixkick:
I have two requests:
1. I have to change the CV boots. Do you have any instructions for it? I tried to search your other site, where you have the instruction, but was not successful in finding one. The closest I came to was under instruction "how to drop oil-pan", but the URLs noted on that page are no longer work. Even teh URLs noted in the one that you have answered in this forum (in 2013) do not work!

2. The driver side parking/emergency cable does not get activated when the hand-brake is pulled, and thus, does not lock the wheel. Based on your experience, do you think I would be able to release it, or I would have to replace it? I know this is not a fair question, since you cannot see the situation, but I thought, perhaps based on your vast experience, you could shed some light on this issue.

yes, after 10 years, URLs have moved. a battle.
there are 2 boots sold.
split boots. (buy them read instructions, and bingo, done)
I have post #1 in the welcome screen , on this BBS forum. above. that tell every one, ActsFAQ NEW PAGES, (HE MOVED)
AND THE NEW , BOOK PAGE Now that suzuki-info site went off the AIR. (dead)
chapter 4 seen here in 1st book covers CV, as do all vitara/sidekick/trackers with 4wd. up till the year, they deleted end axle locking hubs. (went to central axle , lock ,)
http://www.rhinoman.org/manuals/vitara/vit_manuals.html

stock full boots. are covered in every suzuki in print.,and as you can see axle must be pulled.
the latter is covered, in many places.
The FSM book 1996 , free.
seen below....
and here , as you found.
type CV in the the search box, at fixkick.com
it land you here, shows pan drop and axle pull.

http://www.fixkick.com/axles/Pan-drop/pandrop.html#cv
the first link for the FSM is dead due to ACKFAQ moved all his web pages. but its still here. now.
chapter 4C covers this totally seen here.
4C page 8. begin.
http://www.acksfaq.com/2016bp.php?urlnam...kerfsm.htm

you said links were dead, sure, but no all the 3 line down says best link
http://bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/topic,1...msg1156298

you missed that?

the person on zuharrie, asks question , fully covered in step 6,
it states remove the axle snap ring, (not the wheel hub nor bearing of same or nuts for same,)
the hub comes off in chapter 4c page 8, exposing the snap ring, seen many of these cars missing this ring.
there are 14 steps just to extract it. on page 8 and 9.

step 10, see the word slowly there, they are dropping the lower ball, freeing up the spindle.

my page shows that snap ring as ID 14, on pan drop page.
do you get hung up on any of the 14 steps, say so and we can elaborate each step.

it states unit repair is covered later in this section
true
starting on page C4-14. (page 16 a step there shows installing the boot)

Thank you very kindly for your detailed reply, as usual. I ordered the Dorman split type boots (never knew about it - so THANK YOU!).

Any comment about my parking brake questions?

well there are only x causes.
1: the cable is bad, rusting and sticking or is stretched out damage or age. this list is kinda backwards but full , i think.
2: the 2 cables are not balanced (adjusted at lever rear) like the FSM shows. ( please read how to setup brakes in the free book )
3: the brake shoes are wrong, or damage or not connected to the emg. cable end correctly (takes looking) even wrong shoes , are possible, see #6 below.
4: The brake shoes were never adjusted, correctly, per FSM. and one is tight other loose. for sure, shoes are first, type , condition and adjusted.
5: The brake adjusters are no good now ,rusted solid, making #4 impossible. (never seen a vitara/sidekick not damaged here, this old , all are, till i lay hands.... )
6: not running same brand shoes, and model shoes on both sides, and running older brand, left side and newer brand right, that is why they tell you, change shoe on the whole axle (4 shoes in a box, new)
7: keep in mind the adjusters are not all the same 1989 to 2004, so look careful in the book,, make sure the book matches what is on your car and year, some have autoadjusters, the book tells you how to do those too.. (backing up, method)
There are auto adjuster cars and manual only (with rubber plugs to access them, using the drag by hand felt test, and click count adjusted method)

for SURE this is all done from rear to front (center) of car. (did my first one in 1964)

GOOD LUCK !!!

goodluck, to you
hope those adjusters, all are still ok, and ready to be used, no rust.
i think the top brake makers , make these small parts, check out rockauto.com
the 91 has bolts to hold the rear drums on, unlike newer cars.
inboard blots./nuts.
http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/suzuk.../wheel+hub

see me replace part 21/22 here.
http://www.fixkick.com/brakes/brakes.html

this part has autoadjuster teeth in side.
96 year, it changed this part.

seems there are more seller of brake parts now, not just DORMAN.
good.,

ps.: part ID 11, is the emergancy brake lever. that moves the shoes, via a lever.
the emrg. adjuster in on the rear of the brake lever , console removed, its a pair of balancing adjuster screws.
the free 96 FSM covers this adjuster, methods. as its not changed design.
