98 Tracker 1.6 16V Crankshaft Position Sensor

Looks like it's got an oil leak, oil is dripping off it and it doesn't seem like it's coming from above.

Does this sensor penetrate the oil-containing parts of the engine, if so how it is sealed?

Only one bolt holds it in place and I don't see how a gasket would seal it. Maybe an O-ring??

No it does not penetrate any oil spaces.
it only goes to the bottom of the crank sensor, up front.

here are the leakers in order of most likely.
1: front valve cover seal leaks dont front of engine behind cam belt, VC fail 10x1 or all else and is a 60k service point at the belt change it tell us to set
lash (check it) to do that the VC comes off and gets replaced and nobody does,. so... leaks. gets hard and leak.
2: camp seal bad or put in wrong,
3: crank seal bad. or installed wrong.
4: pan gasket bad, nah, if never touched it never fails. its RTV glued on in the factor and pressure tested, then, and is very hard to get off even with engine out of car and upside down, removing pan will be hard. RTV is strong stuff. it has no gasket , if one is found,its not STOCK and a gasket added kills this CKP dead. (due to stacking distance (gap) wrong.

5: the last guy fixed the leak but the harness to the sensor is fully saturated in oil and drives for a month leaking, or 2, that is what my 97 did. no leaks at all
just and ECHO of one. (proven by look and proving there are no leaks behind cam belt cover and then drove it with sensor removed. found out only the wires leaked, OMG, really.

see the hole there, see the pan fitting there with large pan hole, the pan seals around the old and has no relationship to the sensor.(oil-wise)

look behind the cam belt. leaks there? the oil falls down hill.

the center there, is the dry side, that orange stuff is pan seal RTV
id bet the pan dont leak,, odds are it does not.
and is the most hard job of all , as seen here. (pull engine or)

yes engine runs CKP unplugged
yes CEL glows
yes OBD2 yells bad CKP
yes, but it runs and you can watch for leaks running, OBD2 shuts down the misfire monitor, when CKP dies.


here is the last proof and you can see the large space the pan has to seal around the CMP mount.

if the CMP did have a seal for it.
then the oil just runs out that huge gap in the front bottom of CAM belt cover, (plastic crude cover) and runs to , the same spot. nothing can stop that. flow. besides finding leak and correcting it.

as you can see the 1996+ cars get a new pump.,
OBD2 usa laws. mandated it. (for misfire detection)

look careful and see notch in the 11pm location that is so oil can fall out and not soak the belt with oil, the seals on the cover or for keeping sand out of cam belt area and not to stop oil of any kind.
there ive covers this 100%
there is one other post just like this, but the search box seems, DOA.
o-ring is dip stick ring and oil pickup screen seal.

OK, thanks for the good info! Looks like I'll have to do more checking to find those pesky leaks. I already replaced the crankshaft seal last year, and the dipstick O-ring is new, so hopefully they're not the leakers. Might have to Gunk the motor then get some UV die to see where it's coming from.

on G16 this old, it's random.
valve cover gasket leaks front. super common if not doing lash and new gaskets every 60k , all leak here, if ignored. (the gasket gets hard, and leaks)
top cam seal.
top cam seal clamp not installed correctly or damaged.
crank seal. front.
both seals done wrong, and the bores scratch, using screw driver to pry them and not proper seal pullers. RTV on outer seal can hide the...well.
mostly these.
one can remove the front cover for a week and just watch there. done that, and is 100% effective.

its really like the Wizard of Oz, who's behind that curtain?, (its homer Simpson and his naughty hammer...evil)
