97 Sport tail light , back-up lights & tag light
#1
Trying to get the 97 sport with auto transmission road inspected.  I don't have tail lights, back-up lights or tag lights.  I have inspected, replaced fuses as I find them.  It seems that this must be a rear harness or some cluster that is out.
I noticed two items under the dash,
1) a 4 wire plug is not connected. Looks like it maybe should plug into a switch.  A white plug, receptacle.
2) a single wire is hanging with a single wire plug to wire is not connected.   It is orange w/ black or blue hash.  I don't see a wire to connect with it.  This looks to be factory installed.

It looks like someone may have done some re-wiring in the not so long past.
i see what looks like two fusible links under the dash that look intact.
Not sure where to go, except start from the rear and see if I can trace them back.

Thanks for your help.

hash marks are actually dots, and are market codes, what matters on wires is main color and the strip.

welcome Hoopt  (j18 sport)
do  THE HEAD LAMPS WORK RIGHT, ? AND ALL PARKING LAMPS FRONT AND REAR(sure rears  tails/parks are dead sure)
do brake lamps fail? rear?
this car and all like it it have over 20 harnesses. and all have options not used, leaving unused connectors, vast.
that matters is the exact locations of any connector and even more wire colors tell me what they every one not black color has a purpose easy to look up in the schematic.
on all cars fues are first. the cab box and the right front fender box all fuse not blown or missing, named appropriate.

on the rear of any old car we look for trailer hitch, installs done wrong, for sure behind left rear tail lamp, harness rear is on left side of body and behind rear bumper

tail lamps are PaRKING lamps (another name) but means front parks must glow to, in park, and HL on,   does it>? front too.
does this car have DRL option ,daylight running lamps ? as seen on canada cars all.  (KEY ON HAND BRAKE RELEASED BINGO DAY LAMPS GLOW ALL)
this DRL loves to fail and kills lighting.
backup laps run off a fuse and the PRNDL switch in the 4speed box, in Reverse.
he tag lamp are just parking lamps so sure it is dead if all 4 or more parking lamps are dead even side of car parking lamps if opted new.

the only way fix cars and for sure electric (fuse good, and DRL not there , and make sure the cluster combo switch stalk (off/park/HL) cable on steering column is not broken.)
is with a schematic, called body schematic.

one way is to pick parking wires and test them. using a voltmeter, for 12vdc. in park, even at the park switch STALK) R/Y wires (red/yellow) to 10 lamps.

facts, below, j18 (im online at car books, Factory manuals. reading)
fuse 17 runs backup lamps.
park lamps path front to rear
Fuse 11 not blown. (front engine bay box right fender, labled tail dome. there)
Headlamp relay 2 not bad or missing, do you need help finding relays?
combo wire R/BL park not bad or switch bad, this switch turns on relay2 above.
relay output pin 4 , R/y runs 10 parking lamps, are all 10 dead?  front rear and sides.  and tag lamps.

this is how park works, just 3 parts, the make Relay 2 work. Not counting 10 dead lamps impossible to all fail, just them.

fuse , relay and park combo stalk lever switch 3 things good. and park works, fuses are always first  fuse 11 here.

if car has DRL the wiring is all different, and DRL loves to fail
for sure the DRL module.

DLR has this nightmare
HL red is pure DC 12vdc fused power, hot all the time even key off.
DRL module controls headlamps pin-1 (lowbeam) and modulates them say at 50% bright, DLR mode, HL off.
then it also runs park lamp relay 2. the DLR pin is grounded in DLR mode and Relay 2 turns on and parks all 10 lamps glow.
to defeat DRL we cut wire 9, only on this year.

regardless of all this complex BS, the park switch always  works turned from off to park (trail) and Relay2 must turn one, and fuse 11 not blown
ok i covered both cars,  no DRL car and yes DRL cars as seen on all CANADA cars and like my 96 had in USA> (oddly)
the DRL loves burn up its own pins.
id 4 is hi beam lamp in cluster.

in 1996 suzuki moved the 4 relays  from left dash to right dash and mounted them to the heater box.
the relay with R/Y color is BINGO.  we always use wire colors to tell the truth.

I test fuses carefully
some have hair line cracks a human many can not see.
I use a voltmeter both sides 12vdc is good. (fuse is hot all the time for HL and park by laws)
or removed and ohm meter (DMM) shows 0 opens and is a short means good.

this fuse love to blow for trailer wring from hell, person did it is a hack.
or dome lamp box bashed to death and now shorted. seen lots of those here.

the 2 HL relays can never be missing
you can swap them. to see if faults move.

This is a lot for me to digest!!  Angel
I think I see some information here that coincides with some other research but this shows me location!  This his very helpful and as soon as I get my other obligations out of the way I will trace this out!
Thanks a bunch and Ill let you know the outcome.  It may take a week or so!
