I have looked for a thread but not found answer, so here's my request.  I need to replace the valve stem oil seals in a 96 1.6 16v motor, can I do it without removing the head?  It looks like I need to remove the cam shaft and of course the rocker shaft.  I have a valve spring compressor for in-situ valve spring compression.

Thanks for advice
well not having shop air how could you do that,  besides redneck ways (said with love) stuffing rags in the spark hole or side ports, to hold a valve frozen, (manifolds off??????)

the only trick is 1,  immobilizing the valve.
and trick 2 the right compressing tool in that very tight spots.
this method is as old as overhead valves began. 113 years now, 1908 Buick Model B 159cu-in engine, OHV. first in production USA. (mass)

150psi shop air is needed (safeway) rags stuffing  is not.
use a  shop air line fitted adapter to 14mm spark plug, most shops make   their own using shop air fitting welded to the crushed spark plug,(ceramics bashed out) and are sold as tools.
step to turn on compressor
now 4 valves are frozen, goal #1 , if paranoid who is not, have piston at TDC, and crank pulley locked to block or frame. repeats 4 times. each TDC.
if rockers are in the way that be obvious what must be done.

now compress the springs and take off the keepers. (many comp. tools do   not fit here) lacking space. <, in fact hard to find and get. (some shop make them by hand)

good luck doing seals....

150psi is only about 50 on the valve face (Area = Pi x R squared on valve poppet. so do not go over that by hand on top of valve stem.  (1.5"diameter example)

Many thanks for advice, it's all experimentation at my level so I'll just have to give it a go.   BTW, can you tell me what size Allen key is needed for the rocker shaft end bolt/plug?   I've watched the video but didn't hear the size.

Cheers!

ahhhh from my 16v tbelt page

( I use 10mm hex Allen key to lock it up CAM. on the 16v ( at the valve lifter rail plug, front of head)
