Well, I took your advice there FixKick and checked out the scopes in that spec range.
I ended up buying that very OWAN 2 channel you recommended, with battery and carry bag from Lilliput here in California. Very nice scope.
For $350 it's a real bargain. Nicely laid out controls and menus, nice storage scheme, easy to use, great ~6 hour battery.
Display is decent size and the VGA output is handy for across-the-garage viewing.
Here's a pic of two saved waveforms, the small one is the Crankshaft sensor output on my '97 Sport 2.3 at 800 RPM idle, and the taller one is at 2200 RPM.
