Both>?
im not sure what you are doing, the CV axles are bad. tell what is bad first. so i can know job. none , are special, unless pulling front wheel bearings. I have never attempted to remove CV axle assemblies, using all 3 ways, only 4c-8 way 1: FSM way, 2 drop axle. , 3 drop inboard side of Arm. the snap ring is #34 here, is off first. http://www.fixkick.com/axles/Pan-drop/pandrop.html#cv and that begs the question, which way? are you doing this drop ball is FSM way page 4C8 drop whole axle like seen here http://www.fixkick.com/axles/Pan-drop/pandrop.html you could drop the Arms from ball side or rear of the A side. dealing with spring tension. or use the FSM way. its publish, and free to look. http://www.acksfaq.com/96-FSM-v1-4c-pdf.htm read page 4C-8 and ask questions. snap ring off. you drop the arm ball end. then mark parts. then drop inboard cv flanges. page 4c-8 http://www.acksfaq.com/96-FSM-v1-4c-pdf.htm then pull the axle. type CV in my search box, there.

The CV boots are both damaged from age, mileage. I have complete axle assembles to replace them. I didn't understand if I needed any special tool to remove outer axle shafts from wheel hub or not. Will drop the ball joint and remove that way. Thanks for the clarification.

sure you need tools. sure.
special no. all are off shelf at your friendly auto store, (wheel bearings , excepted) good not rebuilding yours. that is more steps. floor jacks and stands wrenches, snap ring tool ,expanding the axle have only 2 captive points, the snap ring and the inboard mounts. for joint rework check this out http://www.acksfaq.com/cvhalfshaft.htm
