Two steps forward, 1 step back... brake smoke... - cosmic_splatter - 08-18-2014 Was driving down the highway after doing the valves and timing belt, and the last thing I wanted to see was smoke coming from the front end. But that is what happened to me. I pulled over and couldn't find any smoke anywhere inside the engine compartment, but when I went over to the left front tire, I could clearly smell metal on metal heat/burning. I'm assuming I have a stuck brake caliper since I don't hear any bearing noises. I haven't tore it down yet since I'm fixing the fuel tank bar. Is this a common tracker issue on older vehicles? RE: Two steps forward, 1 step back... brake smoke... - fixkick - 08-18-2014 very normal , doing the service lets oil fall to the exhaust parts, it goes away fast. if the engine goes to closed loop, lots of things, good happen , it burns all the fuel, and exhaust parts bake out, and the cat starts to work right now and gets very hot doing all that, until it stabilizes. spin each tire by hand. (jacked) feel the front hubs. not hot? if hot the calipers are sticking or guide pins stuck. (drive , 1min on flat ground, try not to use brakes,) are they cool? or wheel bearing seized. yes, all that is common on all old cars not just Suzuki. feel the wheel rim, and hub, with hands for too hot. normal braking hard, does make heat in fact all that forward momentum, (energy) turns to heat at the discs. the bearings have about .002" play, when set right. not zero and not more. the hubs can be turned by hand' you can hand push a car, easy , 2000lb car on flat ground, easy. |
