Suzuki Symptom list  for A/T transmissions 4 speed   

Items in Red do not apply to 3speed.
This page shows most symtoms  and what is covered in the FSM, it does not show what causes this symptom.  Even one 10cent O-ring can take down this house of cards.

Fail Groups (all are in chapter 5 of my FSM)  I'm listing only the symptoms, the FSM cover these causes in over 150 page.(just the 4sp alone)  Buy the FSM and read it.
 
Group 1:
TCC does not engage.  (torque converter clutch lockup)
Gear does not change to  4th ( 3rd of 3speed)

Group2: (simple)
low fluid pressure  ( filterstrainer dirty)
high fluid pressure  valve body bad regulator.

Running condition:
Unable to run in all ranges
Poor 1st speed running or excessive slippage in "D" or "2"
Poor 1-2 shift, excessive slippage
Poor 2-3 shift , excessive slippage
Poor start or surging in "D"
Poor 3-4 shift , excessive slippage
Excessive shock on 1-2 shift
Excessive shock on 2-3 shift
Excessive shock on 3-4 shift
Non operate  TCC lockup.

Group 3:  (huge replace list.)
low  fluid pressure.  (overhaul it)
Unable to run in all ranges
Poor 1st speed running or excessive slippage in "D" or "2"
Unable to run or excessive slippages in "L" range
Unable to run or excessive slippage in "R" range.
Gear shift:
Poor 1-2 shift excessive slippage,
Poor 2-3
shift excessive slippage,
Poor start or surging in "D"
Poor 3-4 Shift excessive slippage.
Poor start or Juddering in "R" range.
Excessive shock, 1-2 shift.
Non operate lockup system.
Abnormal noise in "P" or "N" range.  (noise at any time)
Bad down shifting of any kind,  and compression coasting natural braking.
False neutrals or gross slippage at any time or Flaring, that is you drive and the tranny disconnects, and the RPM flares.  (false neutrals) do not drive car.

On car checks. (A/T not removed)
The first checks are 18 visual, checks,
The first test on page 24 is the A/T main pump line pressure test. (after a new filter) a clogged filter will many times , cause a hot transmission to shift but never cold.
TV cable and detent actions. (not stuck)  "TV " means throttle valve (passing gear device)
Is the TCM (or 1997+ DTC) errors is the O.D lamp flashing?
3speed Mod valve checks.
3speed Governor checks.
TCC stall tests.
