vitara VIN code for manual trans?
#1
Does the vitara VIN include a code for transmission type?
Cant seem find a decent decoder on the web. (I dont have a specific code) I want to know what position in the code is the trans and what are the 2 codes (manual = $) (A/T =$)
Thanks, rjm

so you car is in USA< I see it is a Tracker so is USA or Canada car. no your told.
the wreckers car is 1999 you said, IN USA?

axles world wide in this car are not the same. SO I MUST Beg country .
here is my list of proof, all axles I can find world wide (list is 10 years old)\

https://fixkick.com/specs/all_axle_ratios_list.txt

some H25 v6 pull 4.88 axles with 4speed your tracker is 4.12.:1 and both axles must match ratio.
the more powerful engine can pull Taller gears (lower numerical ratio and did) 5sp H25 is. even slow 4.625 (manual box)

short answer , USA VIN does not have transmission codeds, in the VIN, engine yes. and if 2door or 4door. and year. code.

outside USA YES.

the FSM book on the car has the VIN break down. in the first chapter. case in point 1996 tracker, VIN decoder, (suzuki books do same thing)
page 0A3 here

https://web.archive.org/web/201011191008...0a-pdf.htm

see it? clear as day and uses suzuki secret VIS codes.

the next page shows trans, codes, and engine codes, for year. (and serial)

now I know your working car (project ) is tracker, GM GEO tracker and for fact has glove box lid sticker RPM with trans codes and lots and lots more,... GM style build sheets, NICE.

my guess is no trans code forced (USA fed law) due to not needed, smog test same on all 3 transmissions, regardless.
worse yet is Suzuki vin code for engine is code 0, for 8v and 16v , but GM is U and 6, (6= 16v)
The GM has RPO code , and is way way better for all key options on car, glove box codes.

I'm searching for a steel front housing for a swap into my tracker (has alum. housing now) A pick and pull junk yard 3 hours drive from my house has a 1999 V6 grand Vitara -the only description is says this: TRANS 4-Speed Automatic | 5-Speed Manual and the employees on site wont go out and look for me. I did a vin search and got this: : JS3TD62V0X4123475   Engine : 2.5-L V-6 DOHC 24V
Engine Size : 2.5

Engine Cylinders : 6

Transmission Type : Manual

Transmission Gears : 5
Driven Wheels : Four-Wheel Drive
but im not convinced --hoping I can do future part search by using VIN.

buy parts blind is never easy. even on ebay with stock photos. etc
these cars  have many axle ratios , inside USA (3 for 3 gear boxes) and in 1992 (2 axles and just 2 boxes)
outside USA more.
the problem IS you never told me the country yet,
or better your donor cars VIN tag ,  sure  they will not look and  photo it to you.

the non USA car has the blue codes on the tag and market code
those codes tell me what trans is there  and axles and all that.
the master parts list for suzuki works like this,

first you pick the country, the car then engine and drive train.
so see what was put in to any marked car world wide.

the first page in the EPC is country,
then I pick USA if USA
then land here.
see?  then SQ625  H25 engine is v6)

so you have a TRACKER< that tells me you are in USA or CANADA,  that name mean that. and aluminum word tells me it is 4wd.
so you what to buy 2 axles from 1996, V6 and put it on your car??

what tracker you have,? year and drive line, ? engine G16b what trans 4wd or 2wd and 2doors and 4doors, Ive no idea what car you have now.
the 4speed axles on your if is 4speed 5.125 (same as 5sp
the 3speed box, is 4.30/4.62 (8v is high # and 16v low) still no idea what car you have so here is both rules.

now I will pretend, the the JS3TD62V0X4123475, is a wrecker car , VIN USA.
(X=1999 that is correct) code 6 engine is 2.5L H25.
V= van 4door.
oops I forgot the parts books do not show axle ratio but does call out unique axle for the H25. by part number.

there are 4 front axles housings 1999
2 for MT
2 for AT the reason 2 is mid year change and above is late housing.(newer) (it does not say way, and one can dream steel)
2 gear ratios, pinion and ring, 2 choices. (MT/AT ) but ratio is not told in the parts list.

you can not run 488s up front and 512 rear
you do know that right?
(4wd PT will go full wind up, nuts)

I thought only grand vitara had steel front./
2003? IDK for sure only hand magnet will tell for sure. touched to axle (black and greasy)

Go to GM dealer he reads the RPO, tag, bingo
go to Suzuki dealer (now gone) they need to look at shift'er stalk and OD button location. bingo 3 or 4 speed.

that gets me think, ask them if the 4 speed shift console is for sale in the 99.
or even is the transmission for sale, one of the 2 will do BINGO. forced. (good chance)

SUZUKI has no build lists or RPO tag. (it is look and see thing)
When we had dealers here, (gone) they looked up your VIN in the Suzuki sales data base and go gee it has 4speed 4wd. (kept records gone now)
