Vin 6 versus Vin U Confusion....
#1
I'm confused when purchasing parts. Nearly all of them say Vin 6 or Vin U.

Here is my vin...
2CNBJ1869S6929xxx

Many parts mfg's say that Vin 6 is California version. But, in the VIN chart provided by fixkick it says Canadian is "6".

2CNBJ1369W6
2CN ,is canada, cami made
BJ is Tracker 4wd.
1 wieght class.
3 =utility code for GM
6 -= Gm code for 16v SOHC 1.6L engine.
9 = check digit ( useless)
w = year =-1998
6 = Ingersoll, Ontario Canada , aka CAMI.

So, is a Federal version Vin 6 or Vin U? I have a non california version, but I don't have a "U" in the Vin??

Please help! I just ordered a bunch of parts that were Vin 6, but now I'm concerned I may have screwed up since at least one mfg says vin 6 is California model. Yikes! This should be easier!!

thanks,
John

ps. Are there two different tps part numbers? One for california and one non-california?

Here is the exact verbiage on one of the parts suppliers.
"w/ California Emission System (California Emission System Equipped Vehicles Engine Vin - 8th Character of Vin - will be '6')"
95 Geo Tracker, Build Date 1/95,16v, Fed, Cami, 4x4, MT, Headed for Grenada.

it is confusing,
sorry the fed/cal is not in the VIN. U and 6 codes are the GM codes for engine only (EFI )
the TPS is very much different on U and 6 engines, one engine is TBI other is MPI. radical different..

the Calif , rules are only stated in 2 places (unless you dig) the hood sticker. (and RPO tag)
if there are the words calif. in that sticker it is, if not its a pure federal car. as is the NAG switch , found, its a FED car.
ah, but then California banned the 8v TBI, in about 1994?
so in fact one can say that code, 6 ,only 94+ means calif, in the context of year only.

http://www.fixkick.com/specs/VIN-motor-d...ml#tracker

the sad fact is that each seller has their own odd way to sell parts..
But G16 TBI is better (VIN U)
as is G16 MPI. VIN 6 VIN= RPO L01 ,16v 1.6L EFI
in fact some sellers (GM) the RPO code is used.

In 1996 all trackers and sidekicks are MPI. (by law) USA.

the key to finding this part, is find out who makes it , and price and buy it by NAME and their part numbers, do not trust stores to get this right.
most stores have Crap databases.

here is the SMP catalog page.

Calif. kicked (LOL) the 8v out of calif , in 1994. due to TBI is dirty motor, (wet intakes are just that)
In say Nevada. non of this makes any sense at all. zero.
huh? we have both.

calif is really a country , by law. EPA gave them that status long ago. and is a SUPER SET of FED laws.

see my tps page.
one of the most difficult parts to buy (besides the 15 odd radiators)

off my buy page

http://www.fixkick.com/buy-parts.html#TPS

is your VIN above? code 6 engine?
yes, then that is the hard one.

warning some 4 speed TCM based cars have special TPI. (its not a cal/fed issue at all)
its, this.
MPI, TBI, Manual or A/T 4 speed. issues.

is your car a 1998 tracker? (in 96/97 they went to thinner smaller TPS)
MPI
G16 1.6L

as we can see GM dont have this part now. 1998 smog part.
http://www.newgmparts.com/?p=catalog&mod...n%20sensor
Gm p/n.
96068619
note how to bums blank out the name. sad.

SMP is a major maker as might be USA ,or Delphi, or Airtex.

1998 Geo MPI TPS
wells/airtex has one.
TPS4167

Delphi cat, shows nothing.

SMP is the one.
only price is issue. now.

but watch out. my 1997 had a 1995 throttle body; yes and plugs right in and works.
but the TPS is very different.(SIZE phys)
best is to snap a photo of yours, and ask.
