noises come in many forms and causes.
in most cases, noises from any machine are a panic thing, would you fly in an airplane that had odd noises. nah.
same with all machines, they all make noises just before the bad happens. (progresses and some can cascade to far worse as all J engines do, when the chain jumps)
lets do HLA first (hyd, lash adjusters)
all make noise at cold start, if parked too long (they drain down(out) and that is what you get, drained) none make noise driven, every day, unless, they are worn or gummy.(or bad)
then rattle for 1 to 5 seconds cold started, and are ok, full time. all time after... mostly.
HLA can fail too, they can gum up, or wear out. as can all things and for sure mech, things made by man.
DOHC cams (not belts)
the all can make noise at first cold start. for seconds.... (imagine the tension-er having to wake up, and work, or low oil pressures...)
mine never did, but some can, some with lazy hydraulic tension-er> or worn guides>? or low oil pressure. (now)
all go quiet after this cold start event and stay quiet, if not ?bad happens, it's a cry for help, for sure.
if allowed to reach END OF LIFE (chain) and it jumps a sprocket, it will lunch the valves. bent.
I whipping chain also wrecks the sprockets, and the passive guides. (all guides for sure)
A whipping chain still good, will wreck it self. (due to our friend mr, A. Newton) whipping causes VIOLENT DE-acceleration of the chain and rapid wear.! (the more RPM the worse )
this is a cascade failure, one parts fails and causes its buddy to fail. then it gets worse and cascade 2, valves collide.
if it had a belt, far worse here. and more often. (the chain here is a blessing)
