Timing Belt Replacement Issue...OMG!
#1
Fixkick,

When I took the old timing belt off, the marks were perfectly aligned. When I put the new timing belt on and spun it two turns clockwise, the marks are no longer perfect.

What's going on here? I can't believe anything moved between removing the old belt and putting on the new one. As you can see from the photo, it's a few degrees off now.

I thought this was going to be easy! Sad

ps. Right side of the belt is tight.

lots of parallax error in the photo top
but i can see the error in the photo, the notch and titty, error.
and can see its off 1/2 cog, this is wrong. (just a tad, it will run ok,, mostly)
but is wrong.

i own a TDC tool and can check TDC to 1/2 a degree.

if id had seen that, the bolt would be off and the key checked.

what if PO left out the key? and just put it on tight and prayed.? what PO's do is near infinite. worrisome.

here is what counts,
this photo i made shows this relation ship clearly

on some 95 the plate is fixed to the cog. (upgrade)

my guess is your crank has key damage, and is repaired poorly
my guess.
but it will run ok

the cam error is 1/2 the crank error, 2:1 gear (cog) ratio. it is.
so if cam is 5 degrees off the crank is 10 degrees off.
and is hidden form view this error, until, the crank cog bolt is removed
what you cant see with just the bolt off is true error, as the key slot is not to be seen until key is out in hand.
see why? the front of key is hidden, in crank snout.

note how only the key in the crank marks TRUE TDC. there is no end of shaft mark, sadly

if 10 degrees off
that means static dizzy timing is all a total lie. a wasted effort.
in fact the pulley timing marks are off 10 degrees.

usually its retarded 10% not advanced. do to natural forces
so the marks on rim would be 10 degrees retarded.

Ok Fixkick, I apologize for my own stupidity here. In all my pursuits to make the car run as good as possible, I timed the valves. Well, that mark for the top cam is on the valve cover which I had just laying on top to cover the valves for the evening to keep dust out of the engine. When I put a few bolts through it, everything lined up again! Smile

I probably should delete this post to save my ego, but maybe someone else will learn from my brain dead ways! Smile

remember, we all make mistakes, even when repeated, we get distracted or tired, or, slip.
we all do that, gee why did i do that. i ,know better. but was dog tired, ive done 5:30 Pm to 4AM fixes, then went to work in 2 hr. (burned out)
not fun but happens.'

nothing ventured ,nothing gained.
