Sport catalytic converter
#1
Got the cat code on my '98 Sport. Cleared it in the hopes it would just go away... Rolleyes but it was soon back. There were universal replacements but I've never been much good at welding thin wall tubing. I found a bolt-in replacement catalytic converter at CarID made by Bosal for about $170. (Note that a California spec version is 3x the price.) Bolted right up, no gaskets required. Did NOT come with bolts though, despite CS assuring me it had them. Car feels like it picks up much faster so I suspect my cat has been deteriorating for a while. Once off it was pretty clear it was bad: no light through it and had clearly broken apart inside. So if anyone else needs one, this one worked for me.

Every time I dig into this little car I'm more and more impressed at some of the details they built into it. I was able to undo the bolts after 22 years and 160,000 miles! Turns out the nuts were either brass or brass coated. Helps that the car's been in the desert all its life but still impressive.
