No choke/high revs when cold
#11
Also worth noting that recently, we've started driving down a bumpy, rocky dirt road 4 times a day to drop our kid off at school, so think nipples on the plugs were weak from age, and vibration has shaken them and stressed the metal. Simple things, but at least its an easy fix (I hope)

yes EFI has a virtual choke, no it's not physical at all.
its a fuel table.
all ECU has Fuel tables, most are 3D. (or more complex)
on a cold engine the ECU uses a cold fueling table. (but if spark is bad, the engine just floods)

Ive never seen an old sidekick that did not need at least 10 things wrong,
never fully done the 60k mile service,
spark parts and filters. and cam belt.

A full tuneup is amazing, with out good spark no otto cycle engine can burn fuel or do so completely.
the the car bogs up hills, and fuel filter is 90% packed up.

Changed the sparks and leads last week. Car feels brand new. 3rd plug was finished and pretty sure it had the wrong plugs.

Thanks for your help.

its only 80 hp at the flywheel, 1.6L TBI, 2 valves per cylinder and not 4 like the 16v head engine,
that is all there is.

what cant you do .?
not at high altitude, like 5000ft, denver? a huge power loss there.

all you can do is make it run perfect.
full tuneup. spark gap is .028" do not use, for example NGKs setting, at .045" those plugs fit many an engine, so. are not gapped right.
filters.
on tall hills i have to down shift to 2nd, many times, in town
is this a automatic, it will lack more power with that, unless in TC lock up and top gear, flying fast.
not sure about your car,
tires stock size? or huge ones?>
got 4wd
what transmission,
how many doors?
the fastest sidekick is 2doors top off, with 5speed 2wd, is 2000' lbs heavy, (tin box ) not many car this light!!, so goes fast. with 16v faster.
the slows would be 4dr, 4wd, with 4speeds. due to weight and drive line losses.

need to know what drive, in details, and where it lacks power, under what conditions,?

this distributor, beyond, needing sparks, wires, cap rotor ,
can fail for VR sensor or the next to it ignitor, can go dead, hot soaked, Park hot, then no spark to start
it can even fail at high rpm only.
unlike the 91 + just normal tuneup fix any misfiring.
same is true with samauri. same years. or older.

if it has full power, and does not misfire. or bog from low fuel pressure
more power is , the G16b engine or the J20.
engine swaps, both.
complex changes. both, and j20 worse as clutch is wrong. or worse if A/T trans
wish I know what your drive line is.....???

if you did not check compression
and power is LOW.
the sneak-a-peek can work. ( an eyeball test)

this makes sure the 60k mile belt did not slip at 100k up
i find compression 10x more easy but with no tools this works.
can work.
cam timing.... if off it retards and power falls like a rock on any engine retarded.

that is if the crank pulley bolt is and was at 94ft/LBS as it must be... all years, G16.
