My car just reached 170,00 miles today and it gave me the CEL lamp on. I proceeded to scan for codes, but it stayed on anyways. I then went to my NAG switch and slid it off and then on (like I always did the times before) to clear it and also pulled the dome fuse. But it stayed on. I then switched it off, (and left it off), put my clip on diag connector and got old 12's. I even forced an error and pulled ECT sensor and goth 14's.
Car runs fine (pending certain things to be checked as I have stated on other threads here). Do these tests tell that ECU is OK or not? Will failsafe get me errors with clip inserted or not?
Or everything is fine?
She starts fine, accelerates great, shifts fine and no RPM limit.
Thanks Fix.

its ok, mostly.
idle hot 800 and regulates.
closed loop ,checks are very hard to do , lacking scope, scan tool , . (o2 swings about 6 times a second , something that confuses most DMMs)
the only why know closed loop fails, easy is low MPG.
if the 02 sticks high, engine goes lean and bogs and power loss (very rare for this to happen)
if sticks low goes rich and wastes fuel. but with extra power, (that is how it works,,, Stoich Airfuel is low smog, max mpg, but open loop is opposite and more power.
when you accelerate you drop 02 and Stoich and makes full power, that is why driving aggressive wastes fuel, that simple.
or driving near WOT. some cars drop 02 and go rich at 75% throttle.
here is mine , at idle , look same at light flat cruise.
this dirt cheap scan tool is a tad too slow .
it ties hard.
but the 02 is clearly seen swinging here perfectly , this is MAX MPG on gas cars. made. using this narrow band sensor.
this is the final goal, getting swings just like that. and when it does that, it burns every drop of fuel.
what this is , is the ECU HUNTING perfection... (one more servo)
my innova 3160 does this better. in 02 graph mode.

no mpg
no runs better
the NAG , we just unplug it for ever and forget it ever existed, its not worth dealing with that nor is the distraction driving good (crying wolf)
unplug it, its not hard. just 4pin plug with 3 wires on all Federal USA cars. (kicks)
if no tools. MPG is the best clue to engine running right(and not misfiring or bogging)
MPG. (measured correctly)
but with tools
after any tune up, we watch the 02 sensor like a hawk and LTFT, in fact i print out all live data. and examine it for anomalies.
to see if the SYSTEM IS REALLY working,
MPG tests are long hard testing, etc.
the o2 examined in depth here (read the books on topic at ) B1S1.
http://www.ase.com/Test-Prep-Training.aspx
02 stuck high
02 stuck low
02 swings too slow.
02 is shifted high but swings. or too low biased.
o2 fails to reach proper extents (min/max)
all this is examined and if not correct, there is something very wrong.
all cars for sure 1988 (efi) to now.
this is why 1996 cars more easy to fix. we can scan it and do that fast and log it. (no small advantage) but the rhino tool works.. too...
if mpg is not and issue>?, then drive it , forget all the above.
many a kick owners run in limp-home for 50,000 miles. or worse. and driver is happy as a clam, heck it moves?
who am i to say what is best. not me....
my nag page says, rip it out.
life really is too short for NAG lamps.. (no leaded gas here, for how long?) ended in 1996 here (end of phase out)
the nag is 19 years, useless now.. totally.
for PR it ended in 1999. 16 years ago.
the lamp means, stop get CAT checked due to leaded fuel usage,

So no cluster removal, easy as cake?

Ok, but since you know I still don't have the right tools, in your experience, can we use the MPG formula (I subscribed to fuelly.com and Im using the the fuel up log to average my MPG) just to get an average? Again with no tools just to get a ballpark. Can you know this in your case by seeing cluster after a fuelling up, and go, gee I drove 200 miles on 8 gallons of gas, in the city!!

It is very important, that is why Im trying to correct everything with your help, although I dont have the right tools.

Good day. I forgot to add in my last post that if you see that ECU is working right according to my findings when setting Duty on ISC would this validate that my car is not running in Limphome?
Plus gettings the 12's on demand and 14's when removing ECT connector? Or not necessarily.
Cheers!

the pre 96s cars here you and touch rear of clustter laying on floor.
ihn 1996 the side collision cross beam, and cluster is now in a steel cage, made that trick impossible.
the ecu has many modes.
limpome is one, backup, normal, cold run, warmup, hot run, closed loop. open loop, accel mode (enrich), decel. mode(cut fuel), WOT mode, and lost.
this is why they make scan tools to see what's up doc.
200/8 =25
25 is super good. drive it
mine did that, and 28mpg on open road with E10 fuel. (e10 is less mpg)
to hit 30, need , find sweet stop, speed(mpg gauge), in 5th gear, or OD. about 45mph is sweet spot, but never owned a 4sp...
and run E0 fuel.
no car measures MPG accurately its a ballpark thing .
after all the station pump shuts off when it wants.
the speedo is off by 2% as is odometer, the ratio is not perfect , even on new car.
wrong tires size , more off.
measuring MPG is not easy, but the 25mpg is a good sign, it's not 15 like some do.
