Jeep ASD problems
#1
This is in reference to the page entitled "The JEEP Automatic Shutdown Relay". This is just a question for clarification:

2/3rds down the first page is a line stating "If the ASD drops driving and stalls the engine, or even parked idling, one of the above caused it." Which "one of the above" are you specifically referring to? I have a 2007 Grand Cherokee and your description is exactly what my Jeep is doing, and I have an independent shop with an excellent electrical tech who I want to show this information to. I think it may help him find out why mine is shutting down.

incidentally, in case you have some info to share further on this, when my Jeep shuts down while driving, I can't re-start it by shifting to neutral. I have to come to a complete stop, shift to Park, and cut the ignition switch completely off. I can then re-start the car, and it starts every time, and runs without any problem. It may run minutes, hours or days before the next shut-off. Just curious what your thought might be on this.

Thanks for your help! I'm hoping this will help find my problem and fix it.

the manual covers that
all Jeep manuals.
and evolved.. from say 4 or to 8. old to new jeeps. each FSM book on Each year jeep and engine fully covers all these facts. under ASD.
up to 8 causes now.
ASD purpose is but one, to cut fuel , when engine stalls or spark ends. (crash and burn protection) is 99%software and 1 relay.
99% is software monitors.

see 1 to 8 here

why not scan and drive, no scan tool?
if you scan and drive, and get any DTC or pending DTC, that be it
if the comms drop dead, while driving (OBD2 comms) then you lost 12vdc power to the PCM.

its that easy.... in fact the newer cars even now report, (battery failure ) DTCs.

why not say what car you have? 1993 to now? vast cars by jeep.

THE ASD CAN CAUSE
fail to start (no spark, and as a result no FUEL by logic in the ECU/pcm)
stalls
or bucking

the first thing to do ; is look at the cluster! (I/P cluster) warning lamps.
at the (problem time)
if the security lamp us glowing, on my 2008/10 jeeps its just red LED ball. lamp, no words. no icon. (stealthy to fool thieves.) your year car, not stated so can be fully accurate here....
the 2nd lamp is CEL but be warned many failures take 3 trips to SET A DTC, the useless (mostly) CEL.. if on , sure, if off means (ZERO) study OBD2 trip rules. (complex) study Pendings more. (if car stalls check freeze frame)

the Key on 3 times , trick (crude DTC checks) to see cause, is near useless. (sure luck happens, as always here)
the reasons is complex. but has to do with 2 reasons.
the trip rules.
and some codes can in fact rest fast, super fast.! fooling you...

Ok - I'm having a little trouble following some of your description, but, two things you refrenced above - stalls or bucking. Those are the two things my car is doing. Please tell me how or what to check. This thing is driving me crazy ( no pun intendd)!

no car stated, how can I help with 24 jeeps with OBD1/2 technology?

stalls and bucking, ok,, we can work that,
this can be caused by over 50 reasons but , most times that spark or ALL things that create and sustain spark.

what jeep model, , what year,
the spark systems changed radically all those years.
do you have a scan tool?>

fixing any jeep lacking a scantool can be very hard,
all you can do really is a tuneup and pray> lacking tools like that.

my page is complex above only because all I know is jeep

http://colorado4wheel.com/manuals/Jeep/WK/WK%20FSM/
get the boot there, now and save it.
THE WK jeep that is, USA?
how many miles since a full tuneup?

the full manual is there.
i have a 2010 WK, same car
but mine is 2 cylinder less , cut off, 3.7...

did you replace the spark plugs yes?
and when out are the COP boots ok.? the coil pack have boots, (sold separate too) and go bad on about 2nd set of plugs at 2nd tuneup.
the ends get all carbonized and fail. looking at them and bingo they are bad.
see page 1599 in that book about. COP (coil over plugs, 8 coil packs)

all this is tune up stuff, when you do that most cars stop bucking..
99% do, if not it takes scan tool to find it or a SCOPE.

the age oil shorting the spark plug out to find a dead plug as you can see in not easy. deep down there, but they sell kits to do that, extensions.

the scan tool will show P03xx codes... 300 is random misfire. the codes are good to know, but a tuneup fixes most causes..
