how to find a quality ecu
#1
I have pulled the ecu from my 96 5speed mt tracker. There is at least one swollen capacitor and so i would like to replace the computer. I am struggling to find a refurb unit. RockAuto is out of stock on the item. I am hoping somebody might have an idea of where i can look. I want to make sure and not get a crappy part but don't have enough expertise with these cars.

Thanks in advance for the help.

just replace the cap

Cardone 1 sells refurbs, in usa.
most autostores can special order from them .

make sure to get the right P/N,  for M/T  96
as seen here

https://www.cardone.com/search?criteria=...i%201590cc

they also (cardone) do R/R repairs. too. (they did at one time) ask em.
rockauto seems silly, after all they are stocked at Cardone.

or buy used ECU from ebay, but most need new caps, caps are short lived. (unlike say a transistor can last 100 years) caps 20years. spec.
find a shop that does real electronics repairs and point to caps.  $5 in parts, 1hr labor.

the eCu even is different in calif. the ECU has sticker on the lid use that.
here are all the USA and canada versions and variants. 1996 -98

you have MT but is it 4WD , one more variant.

im guessing 71E21. suffix ecu, prefixs are all the same.
so is door count. do tell what you have there,
seen some of these cars with wrong ECU in the car. so common that. (wrecking yard swaps etc)

1996 1.6L 2door, 4wd, 5sp M/T and country or state (calif /fed or canada) all are 16valve here, by laws then.

my list of all 96-98

just set watch (search saves) in ebay and wait for deals to pop.
use correct last 5 digit PN suffix.
same ECU on trackers as sidekicks both same label.

I do hope you find one no more than $100
