Has anyone managed to hack or replace the instrument panel?

clocks? (ah pilot talk for Gauge, or meters)
all the clocks look like clocks, including the Clock. Funny huh? sorry....
pin 6 is , VSS, not clock) but then , ive never seen a non USA cluster. not ever.

the cluster has a copper flex pC and all connections are clear, if you trace them.
the diode is a wired "OR" logic, and prevents one error for passing over to other circuits, this happens when 1 lamp , is shared, malarkey,
ABS (or RWAL)
DRL
hand brake.
and fluid levels.
the diode blocks the ABS feed from going to the other 3 way split, Hand/DRL/Fluid and cause a problem there.
The DLR (is an option) and monitors this line, and others, to make DRL drop out, for other failures. Brake, or hand brake and also if the alternator dies, DRL shuts down to save the battery drain down.
all this is complex the reasons, but if the diode is missing you lose 3 warning lamp features.. only ABS will work the light.
i dont think you have ABS. nor DRL. so just wire up , hand/level

The turn signals seem to be wired differently on the 1995 and the 1997 instrument panels. They go via some grey component labelled "Denso" with an arrow on it. I've copied the wiring diagrams as I can see them. What's this Denso thing and can the 1995 panel work with the 1997 turn signals?

Comparisons of the pin that has diode links to brake warning lights. Basically, on the 1995 model, the link is to both the handbrake warning light and the brake fluid warning light. While the 1997 just links to the brake fluid level warning light and not the parking brake warning light.

Both instrument panels are marked 1026 revolutions Smile So the odometer and speedo will be correct Smile

DENSO (like Delco here or Philips in Europe)
Nippon Denso or Denso for short.
our cars the 2 turn warning lamps are grounded in the cluster
then only 2 wires to left and right blinker. then the hazard switch is complex and overrides the blinker feeds.

i look at your nice 95 drawing.
that denso is pair of transistors? that allows (only) just a simple switch for hazards, ? that would save big money, unlike our , complex hazard switch.
pin 3 on the 95, does that go to a switch>?

long ago., like 7 years, someone in Europe told this is the hazard driver, (transistor pair) and one more fella in Japan.
id all those numbered pins on the 1995 first. and we can figure it out.

and the dial is just painted, in KPH not MPH, easy city.

Removed the grey things and I can see the wiring. It's much simpler and it is the same. I've matched all pins now!

good, the gray thing is the hazard diver, so it has only 3 pins.
but looks solved, good.

Is the CEL bulb different to the other bulbs? I took all mine out and now they are mixed up.

sure, it's 0.040 amps , GE, not the other ones that are 0.1amps
the ECU glows that lamp and uses a very weak power transistor to do so. do not overload the CEL transistor. (not only that the part is NOT SOLD ON EARTH)
ours uses cE1F3P
(no longer made or 2nd sourced, but i can hack it to work) but dont blow it out, or it takes out others in the same package... a private hell that.

as you may know that japan cars dont list GE bulb numbers. only CP ,candle power (stone ages. like)
but GM did, so bless GM for doing that.
and is on my hard to buy parts page , the others are #74 on our cars.

and LED would work (with series resistor or internal type)

oops. never take out the CEL unless its blown. sorry.
the transistors can handle 0.1amps but gets too hot, its not heat sinked, so does not like extra current. as you know incandescent lamps suck huge power.

i see some using the 74s and its seems to run, but id not risk that. not when the driver is obsolete, (kids glove it)

the problem is most stores do not stock many lamps. (huge possibles)

or measure current with 12v applied
all tungsten filaments read 0 ohms, they are a dead short, cold.
any meter (mA scale) and a 12vdc battery.
