front oil seal leaking {crank seal? cam seal}
#1
Hi all,
sons tracker is leaking oil from under the timing belt cover, About a year ago,I replaced head and checked crankshaft to insure it was good and retightened to 94 ft lbs (see, preparing for the future, almost one year ago http://www.fixkick.com/bbs2/Suzuki-bbs/s...php?tid=90 ] So I am getting ready to tear it apartagain, and want to make sure that i have the right seals. and am also wondering if i should replace the timing belt too. any part numbers will be much appreciated. It is getting late here I will add more later. thanks in advance. Cheers Bill

hello bill,
darn it shouldn't need anything.
either seal or the front of valve-cover gasket.
id make sure the PCV valve is not clogged first , if it is , pressure builds and any seal can leak.

i added the missing part ID's here. an the photo merge.

Hi jerry, thanks for getting back with me. son is picking up new pcv valve and we will put it regardless of clogged or not. $3part. i also read thru the entire thread mentioned above, and found on post 14 where I had talked to previous owner at the junk yard, and he said he had replaced both front seals. that being said, i dont remember if I did in fact replace the crank seal. so If the pcv valve isnt cllogged , then I may be tearing it down to replace that seal. I did check all bolts on the new T belt cover down low, and they were all tight. well, thats all I have for now. I'll fill you in later on what the valve does for clearing up the leaking oil. Cheers Bill

the valve can clog easy on old cars, gunkup, and then pressure builds in the crankcase. (may)

the lower seal loves to get damaged in installation, the crank end ridges are razor sharp, so protection is important. as is not gouging up the oil pump seal pocket

here the guy has found the lands worn (groove) so bad it needs the overlay ring, seen here.

good luck, i hope is something easy.

Well we replaced the pcv valve, old one was still good and rattleing. It was raining when we did it so I didn't check torque on valve cover, when my son comes by I will check the valve cover bolts and see if they are to spec, who knows I may get lucky. thanks Jerry. Bill

he all, Not sure if I should post on my existing thread, but here goes. Son had car here the other morning and was off to a ball game. I checked the oil in his car and it was close to 2 and a half quarts low, from the leak. yes I always tell him to check the oil..any way he got the riot act read to him (again) added new oil and off he went. i got a phone call 45 minutes later and his car was broke down. at any rate I got the car home and the fan belt was broken. (only one year old, too) we just finished up a compression test, so all is good there, 180 psi across the board.
Not sure if this part is normal, but we damn near broke every plug wire, trying to get them off. So, maybe I bought cheap ones, or the motor got hot enough to melt the rubber onto the head. So my question is, is there a better spark plug wire that will take the heat, or use vaseline or similar to reduce the chance of this. plastic parts would just crumble on a couple of them. wasn't sure if we were going to get them out, without pulling the valve cover for a while there.
So my next step on the oil leak, is to do a sneak peak in side the timing belt cover. i'm sure it is oily as hell there, and see if it is leaking from the head gasket. I do have everything removed enough now to pull valve cover, and verify this way and a new valve cover gasket (felpro). thanks for your time. Bill

nice engine
i bet one of the accessories are seized. water pump , Alternator, P/S (no a/c right) spin them and feel them, , spin them and listen for noises.
check water pump carefully, 100k is long time on one pump. loosens, or anything odd, or the weap hole with green signs

bosch or ngk wires. not sure any can take huge heat. most are good for 200F.
yes, use silicon grease same as o-ring grease on the spark boots.

so glad its 180 pSI , all you have to do is get all this, minor stuff fixed.

even new engines at 60k boots can get stuck. i greased mine, i uses Dielectric grease; sold now in autoparts check out at the register ,tiny packets, like , Catchup-like, for $1 , realj nice.

good to hear you got it just in time.....

Hi Jerry, ya was a lucky deal catching it in time. I will check water pump and alternator, although alt is 3 months old, and water pump was replaced a year ago, along with head and timing parts. i know they can go bad at any time tho. haha. car does have ac, but it is not working. I am running a belt on this. should i remove the belt and run it with out the compressor spinning... I guess I wasn't sure if I should. makes sense not to spin it though.
I had another post here about charging problems, I bought from rock auto. I think It was a closeout, so probably the warranty is up. we are still having charging issues. I will order bosch plug wires asap. thanks for the info. cheers Bill
