failed emissions. damn 95 cali emissions
#1
Alrighty here goes. i recently acquired a 95 geo tracker 1.6 8v and need it to pass emmissions.The big three gas numbers are reading at ;
Hc-2.53 of 1.6 gpm applicable standard
C0-59.16 of 20.00
nox- 1.36 of 3.00
have gone through the whole egr system and cleared all carbon/verified egr system operational(passed the bark and stall test after a good soak and carbon cleaning). no codes in ecm. replaced the pcv and have timing set to 10 degrees btdc. new plugs and wires as well. The egr thermoprobe is working now (10k ohm resistor made sure of that). Kind of at a loss of what to look for next.Would like to be able to see some data but the 5 scan tools ive tried can only access codes. The speedometer needle bounces a tiny bit until 25 mph. ive heard the vss can have an affect on the afr but unsure if that is causing it to run this rich. drives great, doesnt seem like its in limphome mode  and has plenty of pep

Hc-2.53 of 1.6 gpm applicable standard  (the scale is PPM) oops PGM is grams per mile. (unburned  fuel HC) does the mean a tad ritch?
C0-59.16 of 20.00 ( percent)  59% say?  CARBON MONOIDE, (means INCOMPLETE COMBUSTION( as in black smoke) (super bad)
nox- 1.36 of 3.00 (nitrous Oxide nasty gas)  Bad EGR and or DEAD 3 way cat ,  must be 3 way CAT or is usless in calif.   so is good nox right??????

what are the 3 cells.  measured , average for car and max allowed,
each Gas has 3 cells.
I guess your chart above is measured then max allowed?

sorry those number look all wrong,  please post real reports, not abridged, thanks.

ive heard the vss can have an affect on the afr but unsure if that is causing it to run this rich. ( I do not believe it can that much)
drives great, doesnt seem like its in limphome mode  and has plenty of pep (sure all do too rich engine run more power, this engine is tuned for low SMOG emissions, never power)
not easy there,  they do this on the IM250 roller, right,? 15mph and 25mph both .
most states do not do cars this old but CAL yes.
id need to see the whole chit,, full smog report page 1.   the full gas chart.

are they doing only 3 gas and not far better 5 GAS test, to see real truth?

here is one 95 off my smog page

sorry i do not have GPM grams per mile charts,  and do not know how to do them.

no seeing your  real page, why? all things there matter, every word every number .

i guess is the huge CO reading, is the hard failure.  what causes that.
well lots really.?

bad spark, spark coil?
leaking injectors.
fuel pressure why the the hell too high
or O2 bad (there is only one in in 1995 and older)
or OS good but reads wrong due to , exhaust cracks near buy it.  16v classic #4 exh header tube cracked under shield?

tell me more.
do not haver real smog  status (CAL state) test the car,  do non monitored tests, in regular shop to make it pass first. then do state test

otherwise they flag  it as GROSS emitter, and that is never fun.

here is one 95 off my smog page 8v. 1 injector engine.

sorry i do not have GPM grams per mile charts,  and do not know how to do them.

grams per mile is not easy to understand (EPA sure)
but PPM is,  parts per million is.

CO high means black cloud of fuel at tail pipe end   (CO means incomplete combustion)
HC high is un-burned fuel seen   , engine rich or misfiring badly, and yours is not misfiring as power good. too high HC can make the CAT glow red hot.
NOX is (NO) means the combustion is too hot.  but is normal if EGR is dead and CAT NOX eater is dead.

this car has no OBD2 ECU there so no OBD2 scan too works until 1996 year built.

the flash codes (not 12 normal) mean sensors  are dead, not that they work right just 100% dead.
so is not much help.  (OBD1 sucks)
other causes simple

Thermostat no  good and  not at 180 to 200f temps.
or ECT sensors bad,  it must read 300 ohms on a hot engine 180f if reads low the engine will go super rich.
8v answers
8v use MAP sensor not mAF and mostly never fails but if the hose is cracked to it, suck fuel  it will. making the MAP lie.
injector leaks.   (over flows due to leaking) the key off test see if it leaks key of eyeballs looking in the air horn at it. test.
O2 bad.
O2 good but reads wrong due to exhaust cracks anywhere near it.
fuel pressure way way to high,
FPR bad, cause , fuel pressure way too high. (fuel pressure regulator) most this old are bad. and will not regulate.

FPR I remove vacuum line to it and it leaks fuel the FPR IS BAD.

basically this car , all sensor are tested by hand.
and fuel pressure
and injector leak down tests.
but for sure lots of simple cause listed above.

be nice to know what engine you have, sure 1.6l but valve counts? are not told. sorry
