Exhaust fumes

Got the new (used) instrument cluster installed and the vss seems to be working. I checked the switch for continuity before installing it and the gauges seem to be working ok as well. No more CEL, although I now have a brake light on. It is running better than it has in along time but I still have problem with fumes in the cab. This has been a problem, but I hoping the vss repair would solve it. The engine seems to running rich from the smell of things. I have replaced the exhaust manifold and the pipe and muffler except for a section where the cat was. I don't have an exhaust leak.The cat was long gone when I got it. Maybe if replace it the fumes will get better? I have a new top (not installed yet) that I hope will help with the exhaust fumes. Also, when I fill up with gas, I have bad gas fumes for a while. Can the mixture be adjusted leaner on the 8 valve engines? Thanks, Greg.

the cat missing on all cars will have fumes. (dead fume eater)
but its running rich
is tke check engine lamp out. and on demand code 12?
there are a bunch of things that case rich.
from a bad 02 sensors. and more.
is this fume thing cold engine or hot.
cold engine and no cat is going to stink, like say any 1970 car. or older did. back when.
if the gas mileage is ok, its just the missing cat. (or insides missing)
24-28mpg , she will get.
cant be adjusted, leaner, its fixed , inside ECU, this. using an 02 sensors.

Thanks. To begin with, it had an O2 sensor code (13?) and the vss code. I replaced the O2 sensor and was able to clear that one. Still had fumes and the vss code. Then the idle air control valve ruptured on the water side and I plugged the coolant line. I have just recently replaced it. They must have a little gold in them somewhere 'cause that's a high dollar part! Replacing it seemed to help the running part but the fumes were still there. Maybe if I put a cat back on it and put the new top on it will be tolerable. The engine light works but I don't have any code now (fingers crossed). Greg

I figure you would be able to see, hear, or feel an exhaust leak, so I would tighten up the intake air path. If that did not work, I would then check
fuel pressure. Maybe Fix Kick would know the color code for the injector. Once I put in new injectors on a Ford truck and got instant super rich.
When I finally convinced the seller he sent the wrong ones, the replacements worked perfectly.

I think I've got all the exhaust leaks fixed. I need to do some investigation on the gas tank vent lines and try to figure out where the gas fumes are coming from. I'm not sure about fuel pressure, maybe I need to look at that as well. Thanks, Greg

From my study, Fix Kick also recommends checking the MAP (manifold absolute pressure sensor). I have a Tracker, but he has been working on them long before I ever thought of getting one. Harbor Freight for a cheap pressure gauge or borrow from a big chain auto parts store. I had to fabricate a 6mm fitting to test from the fuel filter end, but from the front the correct fittings are usually provided in the kit. Unfortunately it appears with the car you have, any replacement part that physically fit was a candidate for bolting on. This is why I would consider the injector as a source of what you are smelling.

As I said before, there is really no telling what has been done to this thing. I will agree, if it will bolt up, it is possible a wrong part was used. As an example, when I first got it, I checked the rear brakes and found a leaking wheel cylinder on the drivers side. When I looked at the passenger side I found the wheel cylinder had been replaced by the wrong part. The replacement didn't fit right and only one bolt could be used to bolt it up. Of course I wanted to replace both cylinders with the right part. Auto Zone, Advance and O'reillys all showed the wrong cylinder, the same type that someone had used. They really looked nothing like the one on the drivers side, which was the right part. I found the right cylinders on EBay, got the part numbers and O'reillys was then able to get the part over night. Why they all show the wrong cylinders I have no idea. Greg

fumes, as in un-burned exhaust? smell., not pure gasoline fumes from the bad tank vents?
NO CAT CARS>
is normal cold, all engine run rich cold, the cat burns up the excess (called HC fuel) fumes turning them to CO and CO2 , both you cant smell, first is deadly.
cat missing you sell un-burned hydrocarbons , black smoke is what it is... and stinks bad, and is toxic, the CO carbon monoxide is a man killer. never run car in garage. like that...


a hot engine will smells bad, all will a tiny bit (no cat), sounds like the exhaust pipes missing from header to left rear bumper.
ok say hot engine and it's so bad you see that black smoke, well that is wrong, dead wrong.

causes are simple. (mostly but list is not long)
1: engine not at 180f, or more, not really hot. (thermostat missing/bad or those silly fail safe STATS that latch open)
2: ECT reads wrong, not 180f. but lower.
3: map vacuum missing to map.. maps almost never fail but the hose does 3 ways, fell off, clogged or cracked.
4: fuel pressure not at spec but way more, like 50 psi no 30ish.
5: leaking injector. (bad ecu, if unlucky)

exhaust leaks near that new 02 will make it stink too, rich.
unplug the o2, smell better?

It has exhaust fumes, even when hot, but I don't see black smoke. I think I am going to put a cat back on and put the new top on that I have already bought. The top that is on it does not close up good in the back at the corners where the Velcro is messed up. I also have raw gas fumes when I fill up with gas. That seems to get better after some of the gas is used up, in a day or so. I have not really looked into this problem at all, yet. As far as the map sensor, it is possible there is a problem with vacuum lines. I am going to take a good look at all of the lines under the hood and expect to find some problems. Greg

How is your gas tank is actually still hanging, and is the 1992 tank rusted out? For a 1992 I would inspect/ change the vacuum lines. A cracked line will mess up the MAP and you can run rich. Maybe old fuel system rubber and such were not made for alcohol. Too late, but I have a really good top for the early cars. It does not fit mine, but it looks much better made than what you can get today.
