its when im going up a hill etc. or offroad on a hill or just stopped. when it goes up I turn it off when we stop for a little bit as it gets a bit warm and I don't like it.
So let me understand if you drive it in town, it dont overheat, right,?
well seems the stock fan dont work , on hills. , but hills , ? is this a 5speed stick, or 3speed. auto, the auto puts a larger load on the RAD.
must be 4wd, as its offroad,,, Ill assume that.
so.....try a signature so i can see what car you really have, drive line, ....

or rad tubes blocked.
the fan tests are super easy with tools , lacking tools its a guess. and $$$$
wiring a fan to a switch is super, simple, its just 2 wires and a fuse.
put in a fan if it still overheats, then that old rad is clogged, as most are this old,

hills. come on many flavors, mostly gears.
1st gear hills have no natural air flow
but
in 4/5ft gear fast lots.
so hills really tells me nothing as does, dirt, sand, gravel pits. mud pits, grass, or rock piles. ive done them all.
and all run different speeds and gears and matters big time on any RAD.

so far what do we know, (besides tons of parts changes.
is the fan shroud still there, 2nd time asked.
the engine does not overheat on the road fast but what if you are in town, and at stop signs? over heat then?
and does on some hills, no statement on size, altitude or speeds on said hills.
if at high altitude, the air is thinner and rad must work harder with thin air. (and lost of engine power and humans panting,)

whole block/ head was dipped and cleaned. new belt, water pump and everything thermostat is in the right way. I'm an auto sparky so electrics are all easy which is why I was going to swap, or have an assist fan on the front as well as stock

the front stock fan only works with a stock shroud, is the shroud still there, try to know im blind here, can see all those missing parts.

we know only that under the best condition at 1/2 engine power, fast the engine does not run hot. it runs 82c

when you see over 82c that means the thermostat is wide open and there are cooling issues, on all cars. with 82c.stat.
what really taxes all systems is moving slow, and lots of power used, up a hill slow.
next worse is 1000lbs in the back.
and worst of all that is at 10,000 altitude. (highest road on earth is 18k feet)

on modern cars, all over heat, parked, at a red light, the ECU sees stat loose control and turns on the fan at near 225F.
some cars do that key out and parked, as you buy beer, at 7/11.
you open door to 7/11 and hear your cars fans take off. the is called heat soak, and all cars do that.
the run the fan so there is less heat soak damage to engine and to other related parts.

In fact that is the test on all modern cars, for the electric fan.
but not your car, the only tests is a hand RPM gauge pointed to the fan.., (0ptical , there is no other way.)
you will see vast lies on the forms on this, the rag throw tests and all, and all are lies.
ours is different, totally.

the core test is a tool for $15 same prices as RPM above.
point the laser beam to the cores. after driving 20miles. 100%full hot engine and rad
at idle
point 2inches down from top tubes, and read the temp
the repeat bottoms up.
all top tubes, the hot side are 82c minus a tad.
then at the bottom, can be 30 degrees less on all tubes, you are seen each tubes contribution to cooling here, and amazing fact. and powerful,
if one tube reads funny, bingo it blocked, ( a blocked tube will read cool on both ends due to no flow of water)
this takes all of 5min work, on a hot engine.
its really and amazing and simple test.

the other way is is using a camera that has IR mode.
see only heat, and look at the rad.hot.
see all those dead tubes in 1 sec. flat.
today we just do that an not guess. saves grief, and long walks home.

I only have questions, endless.
is fan shroud missing
is this car 4wd 2door, with 5sp or 3sp aut.?
a 94 Vitara (AU/NZ) market 16 Valve G16B fuel injected so it was made in japan, not in canada, CAMi, ok got that.
but what drive line, 4wd? is the gear box a stick or slush pump automatic. (the a/t is a big heat maker for sure the 3sp when not in TCC lockup)
is the rad original still, one glance at them and ahhh, that is one old rad. or does it look more new.
the old rad will look 22 years old.
has the rad been back flushed ever?
does fan actual turn 1400 rpm at idle and the move to 3100rpm at full speed of engine, (that is all it does, zero more! and shroud must be there)?
how fast up hills, 10mph or 50mph. when it overheats, and are you at 10,000 feet altitude. ?

will car idle for an hour in the drive way parked for 1hr, this tests the fan and rad big time. not even leaving a drive way.?
does car have A/C or the remnants of one long ago , with blocking condenser core up front.?
key on, when you turn the key , the CEL lamp glows, then goes out running engine. does it.?
if you then insert the diag jumper wire ,does it flash code 12, as it should.?

there is my list.

ever seen and IR gun?
