Check Engine Light
#1
I have a 95 tracker 16v. My check engine light come on the other day so after reading on the page I have done the paper clip test but I don't know how to match the flash code to the actual list of codes listed on the site. It is flashing 5 times a short pause then flashing 2 more times then a long pause and then it starts again. Any hell is appreciated. Thank you

Correction. It is flashing 5 times, short pause, then 1 more. It is also flashing 4 times, short pause, them 4 more times.

welcome !
yes, the 16v.
yes, they are like cowboy/indian movies, in 50s. smoke signals. very very crude,

51 is EGR fail. like most are, very common. (at the least the EGR main valve is carbon clogged) do the stall test?
44? then 44 if idle switch stuck open or not calibrated.

got 800 rpm hot engine rpm?
here is my list of DTC.

Ok I understand how the signals work now it makes sense. What do you mean by the stall test? And engine rpms are ok.

sorry that is on my egr page.

you push in the EGR main diaphram and engine stalls or near stall. if not the exhuast path is blocked/

but code 44 can mess EGR tests. did you reset the ECU (pull dome fuse) and see if both come back?

code 44, TPS idle switch stuck open , can cause the EGR to activate and wrong times.
calibrate it.
set to 0.026" gap, closure.

No I have not reset the dome fuse yet. When the engine is cold and you take off it doesn't have much power. It power surges. It doesn't sound like the engine is cutting out but just as if like you were pumpin the brakes. Any idea what that would be? Local mechanic told me he thought maybe o2 sensor?

is hot RPM at 800 ?
bogging power, not misfiring, ok got you. (low fuel pressure?)
dirty MAF?
unplug 02 sensor , see of power returns. doing so, causes all fueling to run off maf 100%
dead cold the 02 is not used. nor accelerating ever. that is MAF powered (pure air flow)

how is idle speeds. cold and then hot, 180F+ hot, coolant.
when did car last run right?

Yes hot rpm is 800 usually. What does MAF stand for? Idles around 1500 when cold after warm it runs around 800-1000. But sometimes every once in awhile it will idle very low. Under 500. But not all the time. I have owned the vehicle close to 6 months and has always been like this.

the maf is the mass air flow meter, (air meter)
in the rear of the air cleaner box.

the 500 rpm, might be the EGR valve sticking open., as they love to do ,just before stopping at a stop sign.
