'92 sidekick 16v

Ignition failure. Seeking info from anyone on noise suppressor specs or test procedure. I understand that failure of this results in tach failure and ignition failure.
    I would like to know the resistance through that component, and/or the capacitance of the cap inside.  I believe to construct one of these would be very easy, given the specs.  I cannot find these specs ANYWHERE, on line for hours.  Any help greatly appreciated.

that is because suzuki never told that. spec. ever.
what car is this and year, and what engine? 8v or `6valve and G16 engine?

it began in 1991 and ended in 1998.
dtc code 41 or 42, (89/95)  get that after cranking for full 5 seconds? p03xx codes 96 up.?
the signal out of it when dead only kills injection.s
what are the symptoms.?

you lost yours? the suppressor.,?
the resistor is 2k ohms i think,  and me guessing cap is 0.1uF. 200vdc.

spark dead is bad CMP  or ignitor or coil not this, suppressor.

so little facts told i am at a told loss, (yoda says, the force will tell me soon)

code 42 is cmp is dead.


code 41 means  the igniter is dead. (or suppressor is missing)  41 means it can not see coil primary sgnales even if spark is good.  and tachmeter dead too and even
the cruise control if opted here can short and wreck this signal.  (unplug cruise box in dash)


The Supressor, creates the TACHO signal and the ECU watches this and if missing cut fueling DEAD so as not to case flooding or worse a huge fire with wild driver at the key, cranking endlessly.

   1992 16v.....sorry, I left that out accidentally.  I did measure the suppressor I have, through 2 of the 4 wires, there is about 2100 ohm, so I think that is good. 2 other  wires  indicate operational capacitors in the unit. The car runs fine for months at a time, then abruptly dies, sometimes restarts but now has a hard fail.  Tachometer plummets to zero instantly upon failure, which is what put me onto this suppressor track.  Hall effect unit inside distributor is ordered, ign coil resistance is OK, around 1.5 ohm on the primary side.

Ok 92,16valve.  good....
great hard fails are x10 more easy to diagnose.  and not stranded somewhere super bad.
so does spark show up dead testing the coil pack output??  

forget spark plugs for now) go to the coil output first. is that dead, using test spark plug and wire to coil and it?

key on, CEL must glow does it? if not ECU is bad , fuses to it blown (IG-coil or FI) or lamp is burned out, this MUST work first. glow it must steady.

when you insert the diagnostic jump clip to the DLC connector 2pins, found next to main battery , (paperclip)
Do you get code 12 flashed out. or? key on. no start.
then crank engine for 5 seconds,  (1 second no good) and release key the ECU will tell you which side is bad,   for sure, most times,  41, or 42 codes, at release of key, now.
does it? (a bad coil secondary  will not set any DLC code but spark is dead)

know that the ECU will cut fueling dead for 41 or 42 code, so chasing lost fuel now is fruitless.

The DIAG test is first. and using test spark plug at the coil, to see if the spark really is in fact dead.

also if the cam belt snaps (60k mile service points skipped?),  spark ends, as does compression bad too. (2 huge clues)

The spark test is not hard to do. (96 up yes, coil inside distributor then) yours is classic type coil in plain site easy to test.

DLC here, 4 pin or 6 pin  you have one or the other and I cover that here.


lots of easy tests, to do, on any dead engine, even fuses checked.

  1. Fuses blown/ IG coil, FI, and dome)

  2. CEL lamp must be working , key on, is it? (check engine lamp) aka. SES/MIL.

  3. DTC code 12 , 41, or 42 cranked test, 5 seconds cranked DLC jumper planted,, so ECU will report correctly this  then release key last.

  4. spark good or bad at secondary of COIL PACK , yes /no.  (this most be good or plug spark tests are useless)

  5. yes good,  check spark timing, if wrong cam belt slipped !!!!!  

  6. no spark at all,, spark coil bad. (above DTC  ok)
  7. other no start engine causes,  ?  cam belt fully snapped. or flooded engine, use WOT cranking to clear floods, bad fuel , bad engine, (compression 195 PSI is normal) bad spark plugs or fuel soaked ,oil soaked, coolant soaked or carbon fouled spark plugs, we look at them or replace them. gap is 0.028" for sure and not more.

The correct parts are,:
16valve MPI, JLX Suzuki sidekick,  4 pin plug not 3 not  7.  JXL means 16valve for more heavy 4door car 15 more HP. (USA) vitara's sold in say Europe have 3 or more distributors used.
ALL my posts are for USA cars Trackers or Sidekicks and NOT VITARA's   G16 engine not the same world wide for EFI , for sure.
not 8valves .
no J18, 1.8L seen first in 1996.  G16B only. early.
no CKP sensors seen  until 96+ usa.
igniter module is on coil pack top, side, fire wall.  also called wrongly ICM ignition control module.  (it is just  big transistor in fact)
The CMP is deep inside the distributor  and I have never seen one for sale ever.

spectra premium,  MT16.
some sellers,   call the CMP sensor the crank sensor, is is NOT true.  no sidekick made had  crank sensor 1989 to  1995, ever. (USA)
