91' Sidekick turns over but won't start
#1
91'Sidekick MSK1.6T5FFD8

Stopped running while going down the road.Did it a few times before but would restart. This time it quit restarting.A mechanic had it a few months and it ate his lunch. He said it had power coming to distributor but not going to injectors. He said he replaced the distributor and several other things and had me send the computer in for repair/rebuild.He gave up on it and I'm trying to find someone in the Beaumont,Tx area to take it to.Any and all help is appreciated.Love that little jeep.
Side note-even when it was running it seemed underpowered(70 mph max) and bad gas mileage.

welcome ,
all cars car do this, now oen can avoid it, even tuned up at 60k miles, ever get a 60k tuneup with belt ever? timing belt?

you said injectors, there is only one injector the correct word is singular. (USA) Its a TBI engine not MPI... key fact here, big differences.

it's a 8valve enigne, not the 16v and has 1 injector not 4.

matters big time what engine is there, but in the good old usa its but one engine until 1992. (then 2 were offered.)

seems he has no experience at all with OBD1, cars, from 1991. even a 91 toyota its near same. (amazing how much)
so he's is not and old rice burner guy, maybe real jeeps but its not a jeep at all it's a SUZUKI.
but he fails basics for sure.... any car any engine. gas.
it speed is slow its only 85HP pulling 2000 lbs (2 door)
it will be 1/2 that in limphome mode, as all are not serviced. right. Limphome is about 15mpg, horrid, sparks turn black. loves to misfire and stall or not start.

so my guess, is he cant work the OBD1 standard list.. here. (its the same on my new jeep ,cept the injector gander deal)
1 check the CEL lamp glows, key on, it must, (tells you ECU is alive and the 3 fuse to it , IG-coil , DOME and FI fuse. (dome blow dont kill it but makes it forget error codes)
2 then check the flash codes from said CEL lamp for code 12, key on and after cranking for 5 seconds, still code 12,
3 the DLC jumper clip does this, just like that toyata had , but in different spot.
the jumper location is here as are the errors and methods.

4 check for spark on 4 plugs, my guess is he just guessed no spark and popped in all new expensive parts?? why? we check spark at the coil first!

we do it there because the cam belt slipped, all do , and the timing is so far off now , no spark at plugs but at the coil its like SUPER POWERFUL.
the coil is on the fire wall wanting for your test wire and new spark plug to test it. as all shops do.
lets say coil ok, but not spark plugs, cam slipped
lets say no coil spark Ig-coil fuse blew. or got code 41, or 42 telliing you why, oops, it can tell you and does. cmp bad, or spark ignitor dead.

5: So sparks all good is ok, so he takes off the air horn, dang, that 1 injectors is sparying like mad. dand but I have spark and fuel.

guess his timing light is lost 20 years ago? (spark is human set , util 10 year years later, at least and DIS spark is used.

it works that timing light even with a dead engine cranking, showing spark at bout 5 degrees, left of 0 on the scale there.
but is way off. ? means....
the cam belt slipped
if you used a compression gauge, hed see 0 psi belt snapped or 80psi not 160 psi, 1/2 normal an the cam is retarded HUGE. is why.
all old engine we., check
1: compression good x4. why spend huge cash, on a long list of expensive EFI parts when this IS FIRST> Called BASICS in school .
2: spark good in all 5 places, coil and 4 plugs.
3: spark timing good on all 4 plugs. that;s right it must be timed by a human, unlike new cars, some forget this.
4: fuel is injecting?. (the TBI engine has one injector that humans can watch it LIvE, at any time) unlike the 1992 16v MPI engine.

if all is good 1,2,3, then test fuel works, yes you can spary it there in the air horn./ and will run the engine as long as your finger holds out.
i can do that for 5minutes, omg this engine is good, omg2, sparks ok too. all in 5min work up to first spray.

for sure lots of cause more.
like EGR main stuck wide open
or cat , melted inside and engine can not pump air now, and vacuum is 0 cranking
running in limp home , and DTCs are not 12s, in all cases melts the cat, to molten blob.
on new cars 96 plus the CEL fashing like made, tell you, CAT IS NOW DOOMED.
but not in 1991, you just put in the DLC jumper , see codes not 12s. and bingo why.

thats it so far, we do the above, add as each step fails, we work that step, i cant ever predict at which step it will fail
but will.
