1998 Sidekick Sport- no overdrive
#1
I just bought this rig. Everything works as it should (O/D and CEL lights), runs great, transmission not slipping, just won't shift from 3rd to O/D. I did the manual road test and it still won't shift to O/D. I have 1st and 3rd, no O/D. Should I replace tranny? Found one for $200.
Thanks,

4wd?
measure the solenoid coil resistance?
those are cheaper then any trans used or new
did you use a scan tool first, obd2 and see if there are P07xx code?
last is checking the voltage on those solenoid lines

see this.
see the 2 solenoid lines in the chart?
the logic is 0v and 0v for OD
so if one line is high 12v , for 4th then the tcm is bad or inputs to TCM are wrong

http://www.fixkick.com/tranny/slush/OD-f...0what.html

one input that can block 4th gear (od) is if the TCM thinkx your in 4wd even when not.
or engine load is excessive,
and say dirty VSS sensor, clean it>? scan it?
best is the scan tool like all newer cars,,,, check fuses ,then scan.

the tcm talks to PCM (no mater if seperate or not, and he pcm tells the Tcm ENGINE DATA.
LOTS OF INPUTS
TPS
vss
load
engine rpm
engine pcm in limphome
tranny is limhome mode(its not)
ect
and more
the transmission still has a kick down cable, not sure on sport, but this must not jam out, or may not upshift, thinking you want so called passing gear
cheers.

above is for tcm plugged in
i manual mode.
the D shift mode not picking 4th gear, in manual mode is pretty damning. unless cable is slipped. not really in D
but i wonder if a leaking solenoid valve can cause this...
hummm
not sure...

Thanks for the input/reply. I have learned a lot from your website. I was pretty sure I was in the right track. I will check solenoids and lines next. I also wondered maybe cable slipped or stretched. Can't hurt to adjust and try. Thanks again. jggolf

your welcome!
i think the tcm test on the sport (manual mode)
is to pull the transmission left side connector, for solenoids
then if in drive (for sure)
4th gear is forced. via the shifter D selection

since the connection is broken the selector forces OD 4th solid, (tcm is out picture now)
my theory was that what if solenoid leaks, even partially , this might cause 4th not to happen.
also the line pressure test. can find a weak pump.
did all gears work? (besides 4 and 2) in manual mode and not slip? 2nd is skipped in this test.

does the stall test work in low and reverse , RPM?

and sure fluid levels correct. and not overfilled. no foaming up of ATF.

Cheers!
