Timing Issue

So, after reading all the comments here (and THANK YOU VERY MUCH everyone for your help), I:
1) rotated the engine to #1 TDC
2) aligned the dimple on the distributor gear with the notch on the distributor housing
3) installed the distributor, knowing the shaft would rotate due to the helical distributor gear, and
4) placed the rotor in the distributor to align with the #1 distributor cap position.

Engine started, ran smooth, timing marks aligned with timing light.
