Has anyone managed to hack or replace the instrument panel?
#6
Thanks. Ok, so no easy solution for the VSS. You've just prompted an obvious solution which I have missed... to modify the 1995 instrument panel so that it can plug into the 1997 wiring harness.

So I need to calculate the ratios to check that the speedo cable RPM is correct.

All running gear (engine, gearbox, ECU ...) is from 1997 car, which had 4.8 ratio diffs. I have kept the 5.1 diffs from the 1995, so prop shaft is spinning 1.0625 times faster relative to wheels. But tyres have have changed from stock 27.3" to 28.9", decreasing speed of prop shaft by 1.0586. Net difference is that the prop shaft is spinning faster by 1.0037 compared to wheels (basically same speed). So we can ignore difference caused by using non-1997 diffs and non-stock tyres.

So only question now is whether using the 1995 instrument panel on a car that is effectively 1997 makes any difference. I guess it doesn't because the VSS always generates four pulses per turn of the speedo cable, and the speedo cable is turning at the same speed as the ECU expects right?

So I just need to make the 1995 instrument panel plug into the 1997 wiring loom which means re-configuring the wires and connectors....?
