Ok. Looks like there is two ways to remove it. Either taking the screws out or not taking them out.
The FSM says to push down on the control lever and twist 90 degrees counterclockwise and lift out. I guess you are saying if you cannot overcome the spring pressure to do the twisting, you can remove the screws. I haven't looked at this yet, but it seems like the shoulder screws maybe difficult to get out if they are below the floor pan. But, the good news is you don't have to take apart the gearshift lever case.
