what low switch" the one on the top of 4speed shift lever?
or
the 4wd box, transfer case switch, 4wd sw ,  does change 2 rules (besides light in cluster) or 4wd low range switch which does change TCM shift rules.
1: makes ABS dead or radically  different in 4wd. and for sure low range. selected,
2: changes the fuel mix rules and maybe the TCM shift points, too. just  tad. or prevents TCC lockup. in 4wd.
but the ECU (PCM) does all that all by  it self.

96 car as eCu and TCM separate.
ECU , AT marked is for AT
TCM is , AT brain and the work as team in practices.
shift points, for sure. all this is in the 4 speed chapters all that it does including charts for shift range rules.
ABS too, tells what it does, for all modes and which ones bypass it, as ABS can be dangerous in the dirt,  for sure the first years are crude.
also the cruise control too has rules, based on gears (my be,) I will look up more later.

good luck.
