Vitara cant get power above 3000 rpms?
#1
Hi to everyone,

Is it normal for Suzuki Vitara 1.6 16V, 97 ps, 1995, 2doors, 5 manual trans. to have max performance on highway around 125 kph and poor up hill speed in 2WD mode (need for shifting from 2nd to 3rd and back)? Starts and idling perfect, goes like hell only to 3000-3200 rpms, than almost nothing..pedal just cant push engine any further. Dont loosing any liquids, spark plugs are ok. Tires are Pirelli Scorpion ST 195/80R15 96T RB.

Thanks for these precious suggestions. It calms me down. It just, sometimes I feel frustrated after driving my second car - VW Jetta, 1.9 TDI, with 71 mpg and high speed abilities. With Vitara's 181000 kms on dashboard and fuel economy 26-28 mpg (on petrol) and 22 mpg (on LPG which is two times cheaper) I, probably, can be satisfied with ECU and consume habits when driving normal 55-60 mph on open road. I don't have diagnostics to check code 12. Engine do not misfire, it works fine.

Thank you for answers. After you said that max speed of 80 mph is normal, I stopped being worried. Everything else I consider like tunning.

- GPL (LPG) added on demand in way to lower fuel expenditure.
- Everything checked except CAT...maybe he blocks exhaust flows
- Check Engine light never worked. When key on, I get oil pressure, and few other lights but not Check Engine. Found DLC connector, insert paper clip following rules and explanations and nothing happens. Maybe bulb is dead.

new car to the barn questions, sure. ( car never driven new, so no basis to compare power then to now)
but in fact if power was too low
it will get worse ,
i got lost at GPL ,sorry,
the car is not stock. so any answers come hard, for that fact.

cel .

key on, the CEL must glow, if lamp burned out. or someone removed it to hide failures (code 51 tops list) to sell it. or put black tape on lamp same reasons. the ECU drives the lamp directly.
the insert the jumper (now) DIAG.. use the correct pins, note wire colors there. per my page,
the lamp flashes 12s. = good
start engine, still flashes 12s
drive say 20 miles its flashing 12s all the time.
all G16a here do that until 1996 (OBD2) when the flash codes ended and the cheap over the counter scan tools started to work. OBD2.

id bet lamp missing, 1/2 have are here. #18-GE bulb (usa lamp code)

a turbo car is not anything at all like some old 1990s, naturally aspirated engine tiny.
it like apples and oranges different,

it's just a 10cent lamp. #18 bulb ,
my guess is its got 12s' if MPG is good and is then there are no trouble codes, just 12s.
but all cars need the lamp working.
on modern cars (1996 and newer usa) the cheapest scan tool attached and page one shows , MIL OFF, (mil = SES= CEL)
but back in the dark ages of OBD1, they have flash codes, and no scan tools work then due to suzuki sucks issues (no published, protocols to ECU ! there for no scan tools, OTC)

so you didnt buy this car new.?
never drove a car that weights 2000 lbs (light) with only 95HP at 4000 RPM before, and not having a Turbo there?
find a 1885 Toyota corolla, 1.6L drive it, witness the same performance for the same reasons, its the same. 1.6L no turbo. sorry.

what else,. lots
this old technology is poor (ECU)
it cant tell you pump pressure is low
nor tell you the mAF is weak (only if its totally dead and then it reports that)
it has no misfire detectors, nor CAT tests.
OBD1 is about 1/10 of what we have today on modern cars.
pretty much all it can tell you is when something is 100% dead, (but not all things)

Understood clearly!

Is it hard to remove dashboard cluster and replace bulbs? Tell me please, if there is a dashboard light for fuel (when fuel tank get near empty)? If there is, don't works too.

i dont think this ecu has fuel tank early warings,
it does not even watch fuel levels at all nor fuel pressure either.

the cluster comes out pretty easy, on the cable it tricky to remove.

here is my page on topic
