the ecu advances spark as much as 40 degrees total.
most 16v the static timing is 5degrees before top dead center, so, that means ecu advances it 35more from there. at some high rpm, (the maps are timing are 3D. and complex, )
but all you do , is insert the timing freeze jumper and then set to 5d-BTDC.
with the light.
then remove jumper,
must be done on hot engine, 800rpm normal idle. all accessories off. (all)
all locations here.

the jumper our car celled DLC2, is under hood, and is 6 pin connector with rubber cap, next to rear of RF head light shell.
the wires colors is what gives it away.
they like to move it every few years, for fun.

on ours we jump 5 to 4, (4 is ground, is black)
the 5 wire is blue-red

normally at idle timing bounces like mad, this save fuel,, big time, this way.

Just received my light gun that I ordered fom the net Smile

My DLC located at the near the right front head light (looking from the driver place)

Please tell - do I need to remove the timing belt cover to find the degree sign?

Hello,
good the light.
the timing markes are on 2 places, a rim notch on the damper pulley,(front crank pulley)\
and the mark scale here. on belt cover. above pulley
its all here.
hot engine.
set timingfreeze jumper, pin 4 to 6. paper clip works,
idle 800.rpm..
time light to #1 spark wire, (front)
I paint the pulley notch with chock, or liquid paper, paint.
if timing is frozen, and not bouncing its ready to time it, if not, fix it. now. three are 9 ways for freeze to fail, covered in link.

see fast track here, (engine runs)

our hood sticker show spec for timing Degr. BTDC, 5 or 8 it can be. most are 5deg BTDC. (to the left of zero one scale.
