2001 Tracker starts runs rough, dies and then runs perfectly after sitting for 7 days
#1
Hi,
I have a 2001 Chevy Tracker, 2.0L engine (105K miles).
Run's well, unless I let it sit for a week or more, then it starts, runs rough and dies.
The fix is easy enough, wait a few seconds, restart and it runs perfectly.
Chevy Dealer isn't sure why..

I like my little Tracker, it was purchased new and has been maintained by the dealer. The only problem I every had was a bad cam shaft sensor that left me stranded a couple of times.

Thanks,
Dan

welcome
that is nice engine. twin cam, chain drive. nice.
and good power.

yes the CMP has high fail rate and i dont know why and love to heat soak fail. (and leak oil, < related?)
Test 1:
it's cold. so next time crank it with wide open throttle for 3 second,(unflood mode) then release key and start with foot off gas. (normal)
starts now?, its leaking injectors (chevron techron to rescue:?) or is flooding , for any reasons .....
or
Test 2:
try starting car with 5% throttle, mimicking a working ISC but is really stuck closed ISC (add touch of air, just a tad)
Cures starts?
the dealer cant fix it if it dont fail before his eyes.
the failures are not stored long term (some are 1 driving cycle )but some are instant clear like cmp or CKP or ignitor failure.

best is to scan it when it takes too long to start or not start. (or stalls)
TEST3:
when its about to die, does using right foot save it>?
1: easy
2, tad hard (egr leaks)
3: impossible.

im sure the no start, is one of these
1; lacks air.
2: flooding , see above.. below.
3: injector leaks.
4: egr leaks.
5: fuel starvation due to normal pump leak down actions, they all do and key on 3 times can cure that before starting.(called priming the rail)

play with air first. this may tip it's hand ,to tell you why.

#5, is see some PCM's (reflashed) now revised to not pump fuel , until cranked. (prime mode defeated on some)
can you hear the pump spin up ,just with key, yes, good., that is a working prime action.
then do so 3 times, (3x3 is 9second of prime) in fact, one key on, is good.
start now ok. (if not ,its not prime caused)
i think it's not this. due to stalls, (the pressure drop reason on fuel line_)

the ISC device on cars do act strange.
on many cars the starting value of the ISC (open angle)
is stored in memory.
many cars it memorizes the last good cold start and hot start ISC settings.
so if the isc sticks at shut down hot. (this is very much mostly closed on a hot engine before.... all this...)
then, it now cold.
and you keyon, and the ISC is stuck where, hot settings, (closed and wrong)
and wants to flood cranked (air lacks), as fuel is fixed at cold (table settings) this is where the 5% test works (@throttle)
same can happen in reverse. sticks open, and on hot start is SCREAMS.

i had 3 jeeps that did this every 10k miles like clock work until i find dry lube spray, looks like teflon , after it drys,

your ISC and EGR are both electric.
i'd clean them with MAF cleaner or induction cleaner. (plenum)

i bet it's not spark related.

i think there is trick to help clean both actuators
isc and egr
with them removed and connected
fill ports with cleaner(valve)
and cycle the key, the 2 units both cycle.
i think this is a software hoping to unstick them or just goes to the last cold start case. no matter reason, use this to cycle them.
for test , and cleaning facilitation.

hope all my ideas , find cause, ./

or TPS voltage set wrong for idle? its a calibration step,, on many like this.

i think 2.0L is same but i dont have a 2001 book,

if the voltage is like 2v, the PCM will not go to cold start. mode.? (theory)
