Seeking latest how to... 16 valve head on a 8v block. Jump to Latest
#1
Hey all,

Looking for the latest info on this idea.

I have a 93 4X4 Tracker 2 door manual with the 8v engine. I wanted more power so I purchased a donor 96 Sidekick 4 door manual with the 16v engine (this was many years ago). I was thinking about putting the 16v engine in so I completely gutted the 96... engine trans, wiring; everything because up to today, I thought I would have to swap over the wiring and most everything else and was not looking forward to this.

If I can just take the 8v engine out and swap the head and pistons etc then put the thing back in the 93 without swapping all of the wiring as well; that would be great!

I have already had the 16v head rebuilt and is ready for the swap. I have the 16v block mostly apart (need to get all the small parts back together in one place). I can take whatever I need to make the 16v head work on the 8v block from the 2 engines and all of the parts I have.

Has anyone done this and documented it in great detail?

It is only 15HP more power,.

the EFI on 8v and 16v are radically different ECU and wring, (all) (8v is speed density system MAP based, and 16v is AIr density  system MAF BASED,)

was thinking about putting the 16v engine in , THE 93BODY. so I completely gutted the 96...

If I can just take the 8v engine out and swap the head and pistons etc (YOU CAN NOT JUST SWAP PISTONS, LIKE YOU CAN TIRES) you can not mix, pistons and heads 8/16.

then put the thing back in the 93 without swapping all of the wiring as well; that would be great! (I am not sure what you doing here)? 16v and 8v head , do not match any of that at all.
manifolds not the same , both not  same.
TB NOT THE SAME,
ecu not the same, 8v is 1 injector , 16v is four injectors.  and matching ECU to run all 4 injectors and more. lots more.

yes one could move every inch of the 96 engine , harness and all to the 93,  the whole system. all of it.

I have already had the 16v head rebuilt and is ready for the swap. I have the 16v block mostly apart (need to get all the small parts back together in one place). I can take whatever I need to make the 16v head work on the 8v block from the 2 engines and all of the parts I have.

the answer is ALL, every bit of all that, all you see in the engine bay and all harnesse and ecu and dash harness for 16v must be moved.

8v parts on 16v engine and all are no good.
you can not mix heads
the pistons are not the same and will fail mixed.  and the pistons are not the same, at all nor same size codes, see those numbers on that top of each piston those are factory select size coded, and you can not just move them about willy nillly,  nore have this ever seat in the wrong bores unless, light hone and new rings fitted.
16v for example has dished out piston for the 4 valves per cylinder, (a must) 8v is not the same nor near, 2 valves & 1 huge.

Has anyone done this and documented it in great detail? (endless topic this)  the answer is move it all.  all EFI ,engine and all parts and harnesses in the bay a cab harness to ECU.

good luck on any swap, most are very complex and for sure deep mixing is endless deep complex. or impossible.

what is the same is better question and for sure the shorter list, the dream is THAT G16 are the same, answer is not much.

block , rods, , crank , (filter oil, mounts , alternator, )
nothing else (much) front of trans, even clutch disk is bigger 5sp)
