Transmission Woes - DesmondGhostRider - 12-21-2014

I had a bad transmission so I bought a replacement on craigstlist. The guy I bought it from used it on a daily driver and said everything worked great. He was swapping it for a toyota build and didnt need it.

Replaced:
Pressure Plate
Clutch Disc
Release Bearing
Pilot Bearing
Clutch Cable

Used clutch alignment tool to ensure all was lined up.

Attached transmission.

Filled transmission with 75w90 gear oil.

Start truck.

Whines.

Clutch in. No whine.

It goes onto 1st 2nd 3rd 4th, but will not grab.

Will not even find slots for 5th or Reverse.

Put it in 4x4 low.

Grabs in 1st and 2nd.moves car. A foot forward. When in gear whines much higher. I didnt try other gears or to go any further bc I was worried Id break something.

Parked for the night.

I know the pullout/release bearing is installed correctly.

Now its starting to sound like the transmission I got was bad.

I filled the fluids with it jacked up about 6 to 7 inches. Could this have prevented me from properly filling it?

I removed it 4 times to make sure I had gotten everything lined up and it was all done correctly.

I still have my old transmission so I'm hoping if something internal is broken that I can maybe put the two together to get one good one. :/

Any Ideas of where to start would be very helpful. I have the service manual and the geo tracker tool kit so I should be able to replace everything, its just the diagnostic knowledge I lack.

Thanks for the help!

what was the INITIAL problem with the old transmission>??????
because it sounds like now you have a couple problems.. the transfer case might be bad.. you say it moves in lo range but not high?? that isn't the transmission..
AND you can't even find slots for some gears.. that is the TRANSMISSION.. but if you had the shifter out. maybe not put back in right?? or missing the plastic on the shifter???
WHAT WAS YOUR PROBLEM to begin with on the old tranny?

RE: Transmission Woes - fixkick - 12-21-2014

i think old was whiner too.
i agree, the shifter is not indexing, the tip of hand shift lever is missing the collar plastic ,rendering all shifts dead. id 27
whine is 5speed bearings bad, in neutral, the output shaft is no spinning , in neural, (well if the above is fixed first)

most old 5speeds found laying usually are bad, most need a bearing kit at least.

you can hand shift the transmission while sitting on the floor of the garage, to see if all 6 gears work 5 +R and neutral,
shift , spin front pinion shaft, watch rear, repeat.

shift like this or , put a round dowel rod in hole in #30 and shift THAT WAY. OR GET PART 27 AND DO IT RIGHT.

RE: Transmission Woes - DesmondGhostRider - 12-24-2014

Made a bit of a mistake.

I forgot that you have to put it in 2WD High for it to actually go into 2WD. For some reason I thought it was always in 2WD and then putting it in 4WD engaged the front wheels as well. Been a while since I drove it.

So that leaves rough shifting and whine.

Whine seems to be the Input shaft bearing. Picked one up today and I'll swap it out early next week.

I haven't had a chance to look at the shifter assembly, but I did note that when I re-installed the bolts on the shifter, I didn't add the washers that are pictured in your diagram. Maybe this is preventing it from having the full travel room. I'll know more tomorrow if I get a chance to take a look at it. Busy time of the year.

Thanks for the help so far guys!

RE: Transmission Woes - fixkick - 12-24-2014

that's ok, the transfer case is not a logical beast.
bless you for you humble honesty.
neutral whining is the Achilles heal, as is reverse grinds (0 mph)
what's not wrong, helps.

the clutch disc is not backwards, it will not fit at all backwards, so check one off, the clutch is working (free play right)

what washers?, use the part ID for clarity. id 37 no problems . part 27 , this washer is plastic, and ,must be in perfect condition, few are.
if part 27 is bad, you will not get to any gear, or 1/2 the time, (more wear, the harder, until impossible to shift at all or is random)
you do know you can shift 2 other ways right? 3 counting stock shifter.

at the rail forks, rear extension housing off
at part 30 , i can put my monster screwdriver here, huge, and shift or better any dowl or drift pin, there and shift all day with a good fit.
rough shifting, mean that it balks , not moving or grinds>
rough can happen parked shifting to all gears not moving, or moving , which way is rough?
rough shifting all gears is clutch drag, the clutch cable is set wrong,
the whine in neutral is the show stopper, after all it the sound of doom, no trans , wins this battle ignored.

see my trans page, (i like to mix 1 or to or 3 boxes to get one good box, as needed)

parked, in neutral clutch out there are at least 3 bearings .at issue, the cluster gear (bottom) turns at all times, clutch pedal up.

see ID# below
for 3, your pilot bearing ,sure is 1st to got out.
bearing 27, cluster front
29 cluster rear
31 reverse cluster.
there are more, some needles, #2
all to the rear, of 41 ring is dead. so not whining.

you bought a bad trans. in this case, i usually have them both apart looking for abuse, blued metal is over heat, missing teeth, dogs, etc.

one more point, the shifter bottom ID-1 must dog to the lock screws 36 fully , 100% or it will never shift.

part 51 can make noise, if some shop fiddled bolt 54, and lost the reverse idle alignment, it can get cocked and cause bad rev gear alignment and noise.
on trans assemble i play with that fit for like 15minute,until happy its free and not binding at all.

finding good used 20 year old transmission is not easy, not at all,

doing one. (pullers and one small press, and some chain, and gear pullers, and spacer pipes.)

dead center at 45degr, is the side case reverse idle sitting free.
you can see its just has one screw hole and no guide pins.

my pilot shaft is brand new , seen in above photo.
and very hard to get. (long waits from SUZ, deed deep warehousing)
both my boxes, the splines were wrecked and one the fly pilot bearing seized and wrecked this end of shaft. double bad, happens
inspections are the only why to do a tranny.
