Pulled Valve Cover - A few surprises.... - cosmic_splatter - 08-15-2014

Fixkick,

I pulled the valve cover to lash the valves and was greeted with 2 surprises.

1. I have a lot of varnish inside the rockers and valve cover as shown in these photos. I think I have a leaky valve seat and exhaust is entering the valve cover? I know the last two rockers were tight with no gap. The rest were close. But, I have them all at .06 now.

2. The second surprise was that the PO used some permatex on the valve cover gasket. The gasket itself seemed like it was in pretty good shape. I'm not sure what's going on at the distributor end of the valve cover, but it must have been leaking for them to add this permatex. I took a shot of the gap with the cover laying on top of the rocker arms....

Here is a shot with the cover sitting on top in the back. Looks like that gap is pretty big.

Any comments? I have a feeling that valve cover is going to leak on me!

John

that vanish , is normal. all engines do that. old hot engine, bakes the oil and it makes varnish, its not a problem.
the lash is set at TDC at each cylinder firing, not all at once, or the suzuki way, stated in FSM.
search "lash"
http://www.fixkick.com/t-belt/LASH/Lash16v.html

the 60k checks need a newVC gasket set )felpro has it, or it will leak, the PO failed to do that so jerry rigged it with RTV sealant.
every 100k engine ive seen leaks up there and the 2 Dizzy o-rings.

btw if that sealant gets in the pan, (sure will) and then gets sucked up in the pump (so easy that) it has even chances of going to the head gallery
and then sticking in that very tiny cam 0.050" orifice there. and then the cam burns to a crisp.

RTV only belongs in one tiny spot on the engine. (under rear cam cap) then cleaned off , before the lid goes on.
ive seen many engines wrecked with RTV,
the factory uses it on the pan, but is then cured and flushed after. (it is an engine killer.)
seen it in bearing shells, all the time and blew out the bearing, every time, the gap is small there.)

my lash pages shows both ways to set lash, classic or suz. way, and indexed to FSM pages actual.

the classic way , works on all engines
is set lash on heels of cam., they are in plain sight and oh so easy to see heels.

the lash is .006" (6 thou) not 60 thou, 0.060" that will beat the stems to death. 60 thoul

Fixkick,

I used your valve procedures. I had them printed off in the shop. TDC on pulley and then did one set. 360 and did other set.

So, you think the new valve cover gasket will seal the gap? I wasn't sure if they were missing a gasket on the distributor/rear cam mount and the rear "hump" was a bit lower as a result.

John

ps. Yes .006. Wrote that from memory. I have the right gap in there.

i only say this because id hate to see you burn up your valves.
the china gaskets dont fit. felpro fits like glove.
here is my photo of the china junk.
as you can see, they just guessed at the proper size... 1/2 inch off

china is up to the challenge of paper gaskets but not the rubber, seems so...

This is an older thread, but I'm hoping someone sees this. I'm trying to find a hard engine part, INTAKE CLIP spring Suzuki p/n 12849-71C02. The only place I have found them is the actual Suzuki site. It's probably the only place I'm going to find them, but at $4 a piece, I was hoping someone might know of an alternative? Thanks for any info!!

12849-71C02
the rocker spring clips?
its a suzuki engine and part, ive never seen most the parts inside engine sold new, aftermarket, cept pistons and rings and bearings.,gaskets, and oil pumps.
G16B engines. use it only.
suzuki when chapter 11 here, so get em while you can, my 97 was broken so bought 2, 1 spare. just in case.
the suzuki many need to back order them from the far away warehouse. can take 2 weeks to get. not fast. nor easy to buy real suzuki parts

the pn i superceeded.

1284971C03

some custom 4x4 shops that cover suzuki might have it, but will take deep digging to learn that.

all I have on hard to buy is covered here

It's the horseshoe shaped spring that holds the intake rocker arm in place. Is that the1284971C03 or 1284971C02?

RE: Pulled Valve Cover - A few surprises.... - Tamster223 - 03-01-2016

Never mind on that, it's definitely1284971C03......was able to get them for $2.35 a piece, have to wait for them to get here from Japan but that's ok. I'm replacing all 8, but ordered 12 because I'll probably never find them again. Lol

Here's the site I found them on:
