A/T 4speed fails, car wont move until hot. - zukitrek - 08-08-2014

Hello sir.

Im new to posting in this forum but I've been reading for a long time from the best Sidekick repair page ever! I've done most of my repairs using the resources of this site and I'm very grateful.

To my problem. My tranny late shifts when parked down or up hill for a long time? After a while or warmed it will shift and work normal. If parked leveled it will shift normal. I changed filter and fluid about 1

Yes its me the emailer, haha I like the name. Ok, I'll do the steps and then let you know my results, although step 1 has already been done. Yes my tranny is high mileage, around 140,000 ish. It does change all gears, never skips. I did already the fluid level check as per the owners manual steps and it was low so I topped it until level was between the 2 hot marks.

1989 - 1998 Sidekick 1598cc G16K 75.0mm TO 1995 2 DOOR = G16KC 8 VALVE ENGINE 1991-95 4 DOOR = G16KC 8 VALVE ENGINE 1992-98 2 DOOR = G16KV 16 VALVE ENGINE Mine would be this one: 1992-98 4 DOOR = G16KV 16 VALVE ENGINE BOTH ENGINES ARE SOHC. DOES NOT INCLUDE SIDEKICK SPORT

I'll let you know what I discover.

Thanks again!!

What about the full flush, do you recommend the DIY way? What are the risks? I looked up the mileage, is 155,498 of which about 68,000 (roughly 12k miles per year by 6 yrs) have been driven by me as I inherited her in 2008.

The 3 refill way is with engine/filter off and one after the other or on separate day because you mention something about 100 miles but you did in 25? Could you specify?
You do yours or use a pro-shop?

Thanks and good day!!

Here is one vid I found. Pretty straight forward or too risky?

more simple
you have a/t the 4speed, 03-72LE
and the transmission slips, cold. (fails the cold , start, stall test , method covered by the free 96 FSM book.
http://www.acksfaq.com/trackerfsm.htm

you only have these choices.
1: service for the first time?
2: full flush with new filter. (if the filter is packed , it not like cold ATF lube. but when warm it can let more past ALL THAT DIRT in the media there.
3: does the line pressure test fail, in the same FSM book.
4: snake oil solutions (most are chems that just melt seals, and offer a short term solution, (no pun) and same end point, total death of trans/hot cold.
5: get new trans. $3000
6: buy a rebuilt. $1500 (not counting, labor out and back in)
7: good luck finding a used Sidekick 4 speed, that still works after 20 years, how is that magic going to happen on such a rare car?
$300 to $800 (a country wide search)
as seen here
http://www.car-part.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?userSearch=int&userPID=1000&userLocation=USA&userIMS=&userInterchange=BFDBF&userSide=&userDate=1995&userDate2=1995&dbModel=72.5.1.1&userModel=Suzuki%20Sidekick&dbPart=400.1&userPart=Transmission&sessionID=600000000000000000329540810&userPreference=price&userIntSelect=1462723&userUID=0&userBroker=&iKey=&userPage=2

8: buy the rebuild kit and DIY, 10 hours labor? all by you for $200?

OK. Then the 3 quart, 3 times would be the my best bet? That is with engine off right? I would prefer a almost full flush done that way and not risking damaging the tranny? If you notice he stops the engine when the hose starts to bubble and liquid diminishes. The trick then would be having the second guy pump new oil at the same time it goes out. Anyways I will scan it this weekend and also do an eye inspection of the whole tranny.

no I did not say that, my tune up page, is not clear.
the full blown, power flush and filter method is best. all else is 2nd. see why, answer , only the full flush gets the TC fully cleaned out. it as 2/3rd the oil there.

stall test fails cold
line pressure never checked.

see post 5

6 months later the trans does that and not shifts late.

RE: Late shifting 4sp Sidekick 94 16V engine - zukitrek - 08-09-2014

OK. Ill try the home method in three weekends or less, but in each change do I use the all 9 quarts or is 3 times at different times equaling to 9 quarts altogether? For example 1st weekend 9 quarts then next weekend again the same and so on? Do I need a new filter each time or maybe just clean the used one and then in my final stage use the new one?

Sorry for all these question, but I want to make this right, or at least try my best.

i guess this page is unclear
http://www.fixkick.com/IGN_timing/tune-ups.html#Quasi_flush

i called it the quasi flush, that implies its NOT best. right?

RE: Late shifting 4sp Sidekick 94 16V engine - zukitrek - 08-09-2014

But the method calls for three times in any given interval? IE: this weekend whatever amount comes out and new filter then next weekend x amount and another new filter and one last time?

You have been the best resource EVER!! (caps were done intentionally) in troubleshoot and repairs for this model.
