Water Pump Woes - lilbastard79 - 07-29-2014 I have A 1996 Sidekick JLX Sport 4WD Auto transmission. I was replacing the exhaust and O2 sensors yesterday and I saw coolant on the ground not much but it was coming from the weep hole in the water pump. It has also been making a bit of noise. Before I buy a water pump and a new thermostat I need to know how bad this job is gonna be keep in mind chiltons and alldata don't offer me much information. Any thoughts would be helpful. RE: Water Pump Woes - fixkick - 07-29-2014 the is the first sign of bad pump. the pump is changed with a timing belt. so here it is.... just dont remove the Dizzy or you will hang up. here is a 96 getting it done 1: crank bolt set to 94ft/lbs, step one, its a TSB order. the belt is done #4 firing, do not use the 2 false marks, that is the ONLY real trick here. Use GATES belt. a top brand. see my page. http://www.fixkick.com/t-belt/16-fast-belt-install.html as you can see the pump holds the tensioner roller. its not dynamic roller either. its actually very easy , 10x that of a Front wheel car. RE: Water Pump Woes - lilbastard79 - 07-29-2014 I'm sorry forgot to mention my sidekick has a 1.8L DOHC engine also when i checked rockauto.com it seems the only sell the front half of the pump. seemed strange to me but also checked napa same story. RE: Water Pump Woes - fixkick - 07-29-2014 oops that has a chain and the pump is like in free space. super easy pump on 1.8 or 2.0L'' the base is just pump box pit. but suzuki does sell it, for sure. the pump bolts to it see whole engine on my, find parts page. a PDF review of the whole thing, i made http://www.fixkick.com/engine/20Liter/20L-PARTSFINDER1.pdf page 25 part id 1 word of warning in 1.8/2.0 engine pump the rear of the pump has a hose/pipe if by chance that pipe for ANY REASON, no longer flows water, the THERMOSTAT goes quite NUTS. (cycles wildly) of the heater core clogs, bad news on this engine, very very unique . so back flush that pipe big time. and win. If I go ahead and just change the front half of the pump and themostat will I be able to leave the rear half of the waterpump in place or do I have to remove the whole thing to separate the halves????? I figure ill just try to pull the front half and thermostat if that doesnt work ill just suck it up and remove the whole thing. RE: Water Pump Woes - fixkick - 07-30-2014 it should split in place. just rap the side with back end of a screwdrive handle. or a rubber mallet. it will Pop , (after screws off of course) same with carbs and motor cycle casings, we never pry them unless we see and find pry points. (and some do) |
