Fuel Tank Repair - cosmic_splatter - 07-23-2014

My 1995 Tracker has the fuel tank support bar rotted out like many I read about. It's now sitting on the skid plate. I'm going to have a welder fit a new bar and supports. My question is this, should I put everything back to a factory setup? Or, are there modifications you can make to install a larger tank etc? It appeared the tank was in good shape, but I couldn't really inspect the top of it properly.

Should I throw a new fuel pump in the tank while I have it out? I have 141k miles.

thanks,
John

those are hard questions.
the car can go 28 x 13 miles. 360miles. easy, gallons x 28mpg.
so,,, if that is good, no new tank, new custom tanks are not cheap.
spectra premium makes best tanks,
sure a new fuel pump, find one on rockauto, that is quality.
but when you take the pump out some times the rack is near gone.

Hello cosmit_splatter, this company makes those cross members that hold the gas tank in place so they can be bolted on. Their price is not cheap but they look like they are good quality. Mine is rusty too, I'm thinking in getting one too.

GorkyB,

That maybe the way to go! I'm certain no shop is going to do a custom weld job for under $150. I like the idea of doing the work myself if possible.

Isn't there some sorta straps needed as well to attach the tank to that piece? Is there a source for those?

John

Hi John, keep in mind they are based in Canada so I assume we would have to add shipping costs on top of the $150

I wonder if part# 6 on the diagram below is the one we are talking about also?

I don't remember seeing straps? fixkick, have you? I'll take a look under my Tracker tonight and let you know.

I ordered one from him this morning. He builds them to order. He said the tank has 4 attachment points. 2 on the bar which rusts out and 2 in the back. There are no straps. He said when the bar rusts, the front side of the tank hits the crash protector and bends the rear two mounts on the tank. In extreme failures, the tank will come out and drag down the road. Not good! His kit comes with two bars that simulate the space the tank occupies and ensures that you get the bar installed properly to accept the holes on the tank for proper mounting. I'll post some pics when I receive the kit. For me, it's a no brainer. I don't have to do all the engineering to make it work.

He recommended welding since if you bolt the bar into place, you would need some spacers inside the frame so that you don't crush it when you tighten down the bolts. Welding seems actually easier and stronger. Yes, shipping maybe another 25-50. I'll let you know what I pay. They said they would bill the shipping separately. I'm in Ohio right now.
