Motor swap - Hoopt - 01-13-2024 I have a 1991 sidekick - 4 door with a 1.6l 8 valve engine and blew a hole in the oil pan. Several questions; 1. Is this worth fixing? It will start, hole is at the lip where pan bolts on block. The engine has never had a lot of power, it was a salvage vehicle. 2. I found a 1998 engine 1.6l 8 valve. Will this fit in the 1991 without modifications, ie, will the electrical harness of the '91 be a straight connect to the '98 engine? The '98 has an auto transmission and the '91 has a manual. 3. How difficult is it to take an auto transmission sidekick and convert to manual? I understand swapping a 16 valve into an 8 valve requires a new harness and is a tedious swap. The '91 is an offroad only vehicle with a lunchbox locker, 5 speed, and I think itr would be easier to swap motor. The '98 has been parked for a coouple oof years and transmission is bad. Thanks. Hoopt RE: Motor swap - fixkick - 02-23-2024 the really hard part is finding good engine blocks. I had to drive 500 miles to find one, begging on craigslist for 3 months. car-part.com? https://car-part.com/ wreckers net work. is the hope. IN uses the TBI 8 engine was banned buy the EPA in 1993? all 96 up are 16valve. every one, usa. by law. the pistons are hugely different i made a swaps page back in 2007 http://fixkick.com/swaps my best guessing here. i guess you want to put the 8v TBI intake manifold on the old 1998 16v engine and the manifolds do not match or fit. to the wrong block. but the silly 16 the distributor runs backwards from the 8v. (scary) good luck to you for sure. |
