Couple egr questions - Zukiloop - 11-13-2022 Hello let me start by saying thank you to fix kick and everyone here for your invaluable knowledge. This site has helped me with many issues on my sidekick over the short time I've owned it. The vehicle is a Canadian 95 sidekick jx 4 door 4x4 1.6l 16v 5spd. So far I've done the timing belt, new plugs, checked compression, changed some sensors and bad grounds/ wiring, thermostat ( garbage aftermarket sloppy fitting, different style, starting to leak) and most fluids ( just bought a welder to free the trans and transfer case fill plugs) new thermostat on the way. I've been doing a ton of reading on the wizardry of my EGR system and started cleaning recently after getting code 51. Seems I don't have part 50 or I'm blind.. The main valve and where it bolts to on engine was completely clogged on the intake port (port closest to diaphragm) exaust port wasn't as bad but still lots of carbon in there. My first question is if my EGR valve is hosed? I soaked it overnight in carb cleaner by putting on it's side and filling while ports are blocked. Second time I had it out to re-clean I tryed to soak it again but the cleaner would dribble down the egr main valve piston and leak down the casing onto the diaphragm (leak is at blue arrow in link). Diaphragm is still holding vacume, engine running and disconnected. Valve seems to be passing the blow test even while moving diaphragm. I guess once the systems clean I'll know but does that mean the valve is bad, leaking like that? Going to take about a month to get here from rock auto and 360-550$ Canadian. Failing stall test, and valve not heating up fully. Can touch it with bare hand after engine running 30 min and only warm. I'm sure my thermostat isn't helping. Still blocked on that passage. Had it off 4 or 5 times reaming pulling out tons of gunk but can only get in so far. Used a stiff wire and a 90 degree drill chuck and ream out what I could and by hand. Today I pulled a slimy ball out that alone would have been enough to clog the whole passage. I can even hear the gunk sloshish around in there. It's definately working it's way out. Also starting engine for a second to blow out crud after loosening kinda works. The first time I had the valve off I sprayed some carb cleaner in the passages, maybe a mistake? Intake manifold looks like a pain to remove and it's mostly freezing with rain / snow here. I'm sure that's where I'll find the most, just really don't want to haha. i've taken the exaust manifold off to clean those passages today, the passage on the manifold itself was restricted. The passage on engine by manifold wasn't terrible, wire going in about 8 inches then hitting a wall (this go directly to egr main valve?) Broke an exaust spring bolt so now it can't be put together till I source a new one with fast shipping as I cant get anything for this car locally couldn't even find a can of compressed air anywhere today https://www.suzuki-forums.com/cdn-cgi/image/format=auto,onerror=redirect,width=1920,height=1920,fit=scale-down/https://www.suzuki-forums.com/attachments/img_20221108_160738_edit_149113850931933-jpg.108603/ RE: Couple egr questions - fixkick - 12-14-2022 sorry for your EGR grief. it is huge pain to get it all working the EGRT main thermo sensor, is used on the calif , 16v. not up in canada the hood sticker on car (smog) show what country it is for.. Canada, FEe USA or CALIF. EGR is not the same on all. the non Calif EGR uses map vacuum checks to do , code 51 good or not. (calif uses EGRTs sensor,) if calif EGRT is missing the codes is 53.
sorry so late, I do not getting email updates for some odd reasons. good luck to you. RE: Couple egr questions - Zukiloop - 01-07-2023 Rock auto wants 4-500 can. for an EGR valve. then intake, 10mm? S turn hole from H3LL not blocked.<< big time silly path here. I guess you have the 4 egr INJECTOR PORTS IN THE INTAKE THOSE ARE EVEN WORSE CLEAN, H3LL #2. Pretty sure this is where I'm blocked up. cat looks good, exhaust port seemed pretty good but couldn't get my wire all the way through. You say the intake has EGR injector ports eh.. I just got the car back together after much grief and waiting on parts. now I'm not firing on cyl 4, plug is flooded with gas, misfiring, all plugs have been running rich, and shes DUMPING gas out the tail pipe, and can't get bubbles out of system when filling coolant because it won't heat up. When working on the car in the storms my makeshift shelter dumped some water down the window and splashed on the backside of engine, bunch of stuff got wet left it to sit a couple days before hooking up battery but I still heard an electrical pop or two.. frustrating. What did I blow? could the plugged EGR injector ports, or other EGR blockage cause something like this? I'll try and find a page on cleaning those, and the s bend. sounds daunting without a shop in pissing rain. I swapped plugs, new cap, rotor, and plug wires. No change. No change to idle when pulling #4 plug wire except a tapping (or sparking?) No codes ATM, just 12. Was showing code 14 again for a few minutes but I think the connector was damp. Almost ready to bite the bullet and bring it to a mechanic and dish out an absurd amount of money I can't afford. RE: Couple egr questions - fixkick - 02-15-2023 we still are in C19 virus scalping mode. gee $8 for eggs at wal-mart prices are nuts, EGR is worth $100 not 5x that. the #4 is water in distributor or wire set #4 water soaked, pressure sure no injector 4 stuck on. EGR not a cause if EGR main is closed, and will be if the vacuum hose is pulled at it and GOLF tee lugged the rubber hose end so it can not suck air spark parts got wet, it will dry out and be ok if the right side of the 16v plenum bop is devoid of the SST Shiny EGR tube I call EGR mono port, then you have EGR quad port intake man. you do not have part #50 here./ http://fixkick.com/EGR-Gen2a.html quad is here. http://fixkick.com/sensors/EGR/egrports001.jpg RE: Couple egr questions - fixkick - 02-15-2023 #4 dead. its not eGR but sure can be disabled easy. spark plug wet (water) spark HV wire wet , old ones love to suckup water. new are better for sure MAG wire sets. distrib cap wet, dry it out in oven at 150f inside must be 100% sparkling clean. rotor wet. under cap,dry it same way injector #4 got wet so clean he connector with pure electric spray oil free lost compression on #4, NO WAY water does that. oops gee me bad, 16v #4 spark well full of water or oil or AF antifreeze , this just love to fail on only 16v, for sure oil there with bad VC gasket there. it is one of those. no need for mech. just check this carefully. one way to be safe here (proactive) is keep spark new cap/rotor and wire set. like offroad guys do, and not be stranded in the woods sadly no new hood seals sold for bad one on rear of hood (dang!) and make sure the cowling PIT under that vent there the 2 fender drains run free or the cowl will flood and dam up,. never fun that. (yes wiper arms off and is a pain too) good luck to you, and I have made all these mistakes and bad luck too. cheers to you and all yours ! RE: Couple egr questions - fixkick - 02-15-2023 there is no hurry to make EGR work if not main stuck open my old slide show is here for early 16v engines 1992 to 1995 page 12 shows the first 1995/6 mono port in the TB rear. http://fixkick.com/sensors/EGR/90-95/SLIDE/html/index.html the benefits of EGR are: passes smog man test -- NOX reduction. valve in head run cooler and longer (exhaust) engine will not PING (knock) what's cool is newer cars with VVT cams no EGR at all. to fix or cause pain. please let me know how I can help you get #4 working or EGR or other things. |
